Full-time Regular Lone Star, Dallas, TX, US 30+ days ago Requisition ID: 2195 This position reports to: Chief Medical Officer This position supervises/manages: None Job Summary The Shelter Medicine Veterinarian is a licensed veterinarian responsible for providing veterinary care to the animals in the shelter for placement. The Shelter Medicine Veterinarian may also be responsible for performing other services that arise in our Martin Clinic and community environments including spay/neuter and other soft tissue surgeries. Summary of Essential Responsibilities Perform all work in accordance with SPCA of Texas protocol. Provide veterinary services and surgeries per scheduled days. Provide spay/neuter and/or other soft tissue surgery on scheduled surgery days. Oversee all aspects of veterinary care during the shift, including potential urgent care, restraint, treatment and when medically necessary euthanasia. Provide a compassionate environment for animals and team members. Actively engage with volunteers in such a way that provides support for our volunteers and staff and proactively improves our volunteer program. Be an ambassador for the SPCA of Texas, sharing the work and mission with your friends and family and be knowledgeable of the various ways to support our work. Summary of Essential Job Tasks Perform physical examinations, diagnostic/medical procedures, and surgery in a way that will deliver the highest quality care while minimizing patient stress and discomfort. Document physical examination findings, communicate the diagnosis of the animal’s problems, and generate and present a treatment plan for the animal based on incremental care tailored to resources available. Maintain open communication with the Veterinary Technicians to determine the pace of work to be performed. Provide compassionate and patient customer service to clients. Maintain medical standards of care as set forth by the SPCA of Texas protocol. Participate community vaccines clinics in the field as agreed to in employment offer. Surgical skills including spay/neuter and other soft tissue highly desirable; additional surgical skills are desirable. Develop professional, friendly, and mutually beneficial relationships with local veterinarians, promoting SPCA of Texas and our mission within the veterinary and animal welfare community. Abilities Required Static Strength: ability to exert maximum muscle force to lift, push, pull, or carry objects up to 40 pounds. Judgment and Decision Making: ability to consider the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate one. Oral and Written Expression: ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand. Emotional and Mental Requirements: ability to work effectively under stressful conditions and in a high-volume, fast-paced clinic and shelter environment; ability to process information rapidly and accurately. All types of surgical skills are desirable, including spay/neuter and soft tissue; other types of surgical skills add to the value of the candidate. Applicant Information Applicant must have Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree or equivalent. Applicant must have current Texas State Veterinary License and DEA license or the ability to obtain both before the start of employment. Applicant must provide proof of and maintain personal liability insurance. This position is stationed in our SPCA of Texas, Dallas Animal Care Center. To best serve the needs of our community and clients, the shift for this position may include some weekend hours and evening hours.
