Job Title: Construction Project Engineer (QCI / Project Engineer)

Job Description

This role supports structural steel construction activities on a large-scale hyperscale data center project in central Indiana, combining responsibilities of a Quality Control Inspector and Project Engineer. You will assist with drawing interpretation, quality documentation, issue tracking and resolution, field coordination, and project reporting while working closely with project managers, superintendents, and field personnel. The position offers significant exposure to both quality control and project management, with an initial assignment of approximately four months that may extend based on project performance and future phases of construction. This is an entry-level friendly opportunity with substantial overtime, mentorship from experienced construction professionals, and a clear path to grow into increased responsibility beyond administrative support.

Responsibilities

• Perform field quality inspections to verify that structural steel and other work are installed in accordance with project drawings, specifications, and requirements.
• Track, document, and help resolve construction quality issues and deficiencies, ensuring timely corrective actions and closure of punch list items.
• Maintain accurate quality records, including inspection reports, photographs, and project documentation, to support project compliance and reporting.
• Review and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and project requirements to support field crews and verify installation quality.
• Assist with RFIs, submittals, material tracking, drawing updates, and project correspondence to keep information current and accessible.
• Coordinate daily with project managers, superintendents, field crews, inspectors, and third-party testing agencies to support smooth project execution.
• Support daily and weekly reporting requirements for the project team, providing clear updates on quality status, issues, and progress.
• Track punch list items and corrective actions through completion, ensuring all issues are documented and resolved.
• Serve as a liaison between field personnel and project management teams, facilitating communication and field-to-office coordination.
• Assist field teams with construction technology platforms, document control systems, and project software to improve efficiency and accuracy.
• Participate in quality meetings, field walks, coordination meetings, and project planning activities to stay aligned with project goals and schedules.
• Monitor project issues and proactively communicate potential problems before they impact construction progress or quality standards.
• Ensure project quality standards are met throughout structural steel erection activities and related construction operations.
• Support project managers and superintendents with day-to-day project coordination, problem resolution, and issue tracking.
• Take ownership of assigned project tasks, gradually expanding responsibilities in both Quality Control and Project Engineering functions as you gain experience.
• Track and resolve project quality issues while maintaining clear communication with project stakeholders to keep work moving forward.
• Maintain organized project documentation and quality records to reduce administrative burden on project leadership.
• Support field personnel with technology, documentation, and coordination needs, helping them access and use project information effectively.

Essential Skills

• High school diploma required.
• Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, Engineering Technology, or a related field preferred.
• 0–3 years of construction experience preferred; recent graduates are encouraged to apply.
• Basic construction experience or construction-related education, with willingness to work in an active construction environment.
• Ability to read and interpret basic construction drawings and specifications.
• Strong attention to detail and documentation skills, with a focus on accurate recordkeeping and data tracking.
• Experience with data tracking, recordkeeping, or project documentation in a construction or similar environment.
• Ability to learn construction software and technology platforms quickly and apply them in daily work.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office, especially Microsoft Excel, for data tracking and reporting.
• Strong organizational skills and excellent time management abilities.
• Problem-solving mindset with solid critical thinking skills to identify and resolve issues efficiently.
• Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with field personnel, project managers, inspectors, contractors, and other project stakeholders.
• Comfortable asking questions, learning on the fly, and working in a fast-paced construction environment.
• Self-starter capable of working independently after training, taking ownership of assigned tasks.
• Ability to track issues through resolution and follow up consistently until closure.
• Willingness to work both in the field and in an office trailer environment, spending significant time outdoors.
• Comfortable working around active construction operations and structural steel erection activities.
• Ability to pass pre-employment bkgd check and drug screening.
• Able to work an anticipated schedule of approximately 58–60 hours per week.
• Local to central Indiana, with the ability to commute to the project site.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, Engineering Technology, or a related field is strongly preferred.
• Structural steel construction experience, including familiarity with erection activities and quality requirements.
• Quality Control (QC/QA) experience in construction, particularly related to inspections and documentation.
• Project Engineer or Field Engineer experience supporting construction projects.
• Experience reviewing construction drawings and specifications in detail.
• Exposure to RFIs, submittals, material tracking, punch lists, inspections, and project closeout documentation.
• Experience with Bluebeam for drawing review, markups, and document management.
• Experience with Procore, Autodesk Construction Cloud, or similar construction management and document control platforms.
• OSHA 30 certification, supporting site safety compliance and streamlined onboarding.
• Experience with construction document control, project correspondence, and recordkeeping.
• Ability to use construction technology platforms to support drawing updates, issue tracking, and project coordination.
• Strong organizational habits and ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities in a dynamic project environment.
• Self-motivated attitude with a desire to grow into increasing responsibility beyond administrative support.
• Interest in developing a long-term career path in construction quality control and project engineering.
• Comfortable working closely with experienced construction professionals and receiving training and mentorship.
• Interest in hyperscale data center projects and exposure to large-scale structural steel construction.

Work Environment

This is an onsite role based at a large hyperscale data center construction site in central Indiana, working primarily in the field and in an office trailer environment. You will spend significant time outdoors around active construction operations, including structural steel erection on buildings initially around 24 feet tall, with future projects expected to be taller. The typical schedule is five 10-hour days during the week plus an additional 8-hour shift on Saturday, resulting in approximately 58–60 hours per week and significant overtime opportunities. You will work closely with project managers, superintendents, field crews, inspectors, and third-party testing agencies, using construction technology platforms, document management systems, and software such as Microsoft Office, Bluebeam, Procore, and Autodesk Construction Cloud. The environment is fast-paced, highly collaborative, and focused on safety, quality, and timely project delivery, offering direct exposure to structural steel construction, inspections, RFIs, submittals, document control, and field operations, as well as training and mentorship from experienced construction professionals.

This is a Contract position based out of Indianapolis, IN.

The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $40.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
