Research Administration Hub Manager

Responsibilities Personnel Leadership, Supervision & Workload Balancing Lead, manage, and supervise a team of permanent sponsored research professionals embedded within the hub’s academic departments. Monitor and assign portfolios, counsel, discipline, develop work plans, and conduct appraisals. Redistribute portfolios and balance workloads during peak submissions, staff absences, or spikes to meet Service‑Level Agreement targets and prevent burnout. Establish performance standards, KPIs, and provide mentorship and training to build a high‑performing team. Advanced Compliance, Risk Management & Escalation Governance Interpret and apply complex federal, state, university, and sponsor policies to safeguard the university’s research enterprise. Serve as first formal escalation point for high‑risk or ambiguous research challenges. Develop, implement, and maintain internal quality‑control frameworks; conduct spot audits of proposals, awards, PMRs, and closeouts. Strategic Operations, SLAs & Stakeholder Relations Monitor and enforce Service‑Level Agreements, ensuring precise pre‑ and post‑award support for principal investigators. Collaborate with department heads and financial leads to align research administration capabilities with departmental goals. Represent the hub on cross‑institutional committees and central administrative offices. Training, Professional Development & Process Optimization Lead onboarding and continuous training on electronic research administration portals and institutional financial systems. Identify operational bottlenecks and develop procedural solutions to improve efficiency. Other tasks and responsibilities may be assigned based on organizational needs. Qualifications Minimum Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business, Finance, or related discipline with at least 12 credit hours of accounting coursework and three years of professional accounting experience, of which at least one year is supervisory. All degrees must be from accredited institutions. Required Experience Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in sponsored research management within a tier‑one research university or complex enterprise. At least 3 years of supervisory experience managing complex fiscal programs. Expert knowledge of public fund accounting principles, financial management, audit guidelines, and federal circulars. Advanced technical proficiency in enterprise resource planning platforms, institutional research portals, and data‑tracking tools. Excellent executive‑level communication, leadership, organizational, and problem‑solving skills. Proven ability to maintain high customer‑service standards in a matrixed or shared‑services environment. Preferred Qualifications 5+ years of financial and research administration using NC State University financial modules. Completion of the Research Administration Management Program (RAMP) or equivalent certificates. Active Certified Research Administrator credential. Valid NC Driver’s License required.
