Position SummaryUnder the supervision of the Medical Director, the Physician Assistant provides comprehensive patient care within Unity Health Care's Department of Corrections (DOC) program. The Physician Assistant exercises independent judgment related to patient assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and counseling while working collaboratively with physicians and other members of the healthcare team.
Key Responsibilities- Provide preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic healthcare services under physician supervision.
- Obtain medical histories and conduct physical examinations and patient evaluations.
- Order and interpret laboratory and radiology testing as appropriate.
- Diagnose conditions and prescribe appropriate therapeutic treatment, including medications.
- Order controlled substances when appropriately licensed with a valid DEA registration.
- Provide medical orders to healthcare professionals consistent with institutional policies.
- Perform procedures and other clinical tasks delegated by the supervising physician within the physician's scope of practice.
- Provide patient education regarding health maintenance and specific health conditions and participate in screening programs.
- Make appropriate referrals to specialists, hospitals, and other healthcare services.
- Recognize and manage common acute and chronic illnesses within the Physician Assistant's scope of practice.
- Provide immediate emergency care and arrange transportation to an appropriate hospital or healthcare service when necessary.
- Maintain required supervising physician documentation and delegation agreements.
- Collaborate with social workers, physicians, and other members of the healthcare team regarding treatment, referrals, and follow-up care.
- Participate in peer review and quality improvement activities.
- Attend meetings as assigned.
- Perform other related duties as required.
- Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant program.
- Successful completion of the NCCPA examination.
- Current Washington, DC Physician Assistant license.
- 2–3 years of experience in an ambulatory care setting preferred.
- Familiarity with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the Physician Assistant field.
