Principal Cloud Engineer

Role Summary The Principal Cloud Engineer is a senior technical leader who pairs architectural vision with hands‑on engineering execution. The role focuses on designing reference architectures, patterns and standards that support Greystar’s global operations and implementing those designs using modern cloud practices. It is an individual‑contributor position with a strong mentoring component. Responsibilities Cloud Architecture & Engineering Design and build reference architectures, design patterns and technology standards that ensure consistency, security and scalability across all environments. Design, implement and continuously improve the private networking architecture, including hub‑and‑spoke topology, private endpoint strategy, DNS architecture and network segmentation for all cloud environments. Design and deliver reference patterns for AKS and containerized workloads that underpin near‑term initiatives. Design and implement infrastructure solutions across multi‑cloud environments (Azure, AWS) with emphasis on reliability, security and cost‑efficiency. Build infrastructure patterns for AI workloads and the Databricks data plane that D2AI’s analytics and AI products depend on. Enablement for Application Development Teams Partner closely with application development teams to provide patterns, guardrails and platform capabilities they need to ship confidently. Build and maintain reference implementations, Terraform modules, pipeline templates and starter architectures that remove friction for product teams. Serve as a trusted technical advisor on cloud design reviews, helping teams choose the right services and patterns for their workloads. Infrastructure as Code & Automation Champion Infrastructure as Code practices using Terraform, ensuring repeatable, version‑controlled, and auditable deployments. Build and maintain enterprise‑wide CI/CD pipeline standards, branching strategies and release patterns. Use AI tooling to accelerate IaC authoring, runbooks and documentation. Set standards for AI‑driven practices that the platform team adopts. Reliability & Operational Excellence Implement and maintain reliability standards, including SLO/SLI frameworks, error budgets and availability targets by workload tier. Define and enforce observability standards (logging, tracing, metrics, dashboards and alerting) across services. Build the incident management framework, including severity definitions, escalation paths and on‑call structure. Develop and maintain production readiness and operational acceptance criteria that services must satisfy before hand‑off. Maintain operational lifecycle standards for patching, upgrades, secret rotation, backup and disaster recovery, and capacity planning. Platform Standards & Governance Build and maintain governance frameworks for cloud decisions, including platform selection, service adoption and landing zone design. Implement best practices for cloud security, identity, network segmentation and policy guardrails. Drive cost governance, including tagging, budgeting and right‑sizing patterns. Author and maintain comprehensive technical documentation such as architecture decision records and standard operating procedures. Prototype new platform capabilities before codifying them as enterprise standards. Technical Leadership & Mentorship Mentor and coach cloud and platform engineers, providing technical guidance, architectural thinking and code reviews. Collaborate cross‑functionally with DevOps, security, application and business teams to align cloud capabilities with organizational needs. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or related field, or equivalent professional experience. 10+ years of progressive experience in cloud, infrastructure or platform engineering, with at least 3 years in a senior or principal‑level role. Strong conceptual mastery of cloud computing fundamentals (IAM, VNets/VPCs, load balancing, DNS, compute, storage). Deep hands‑on experience with Azure private networking (hub‑and‑spoke, private DNS zones, private endpoints, network security controls). Hands‑on expertise with Terraform or equivalent IaC tools (Bicep, CloudFormation). Proficiency with Git‑based version control and CI/CD pipeline design and management. Experience with containerization technologies, particularly Docker. Demonstrated ability to mentor and influence engineering teams without direct management authority. Excellent communication skills, able to translate complex technical concepts to diverse audiences. Preferred Qualifications Extensive hands‑on experience with Azure, including Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, Azure Policy, Entra ID, PIM, SCIM, and workload identity federation. Experience with GitLab CI/CD, Jenkins or similar platforms. Programming or scripting proficiency in PowerShell, Python or Bash. Experience supporting AI and ML workloads in the cloud: GPU and accelerated compute, model serving, MLOps or LLMOps tooling, Databricks or AI cost management. Experience defining operational standards (SLOs, observability, incident management, production readiness) for a large organization. Knowledge of security and compliance frameworks (SOC2, PCI, CIS benchmarks). Experience developing technology standards, governance processes or architectural review practices for mid‑to‑large organizations. Cloud certifications (e.g., Azure Solutions Architect Expert, AWS Solutions Architect, HashiCorp Terraform Associate) are a plus. Compensation & Benefits Annual salary range: $160,000 – $190,000 USD. Eligible for quarterly or annual bonus based on individual and company performance. 401(k) plan with company match up to 6% after 6 months of service.
