RATE OF PAY: Published on RSD Hourly Salary Schedule

Note: This position has variable hours and no benefits

PRIMARY PURPOSE

This temporary position reports to the Swimming Pool Supervisor. In the event the Swimming Pool Supervisor is not on site, the swim instructor reports to the Lead Lifeguard. Primary duties include teaching all ages and all levels of the American Red Cross Learn to Swim Program, assisting other instructors with their classes, teaching and supervising instructor aides, teaching the public habits and attitudes that lead to safe aquatic recreation.

Employees should be able to show knowledge of swimming skills, classroom management, organization of materials, and ability to make and follow block and lesson plans. Employees may be required to work special events, evenings, weekends, and split shifts. Employees must be mature, trustworthy, and able to work independently. The employee is subject to an annual evaluation and must be able to accept constructive feedback. A background check is a condition of employment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Arrive and be ready to work on time.

2. Be physically, mentally and emotionally ready to teach.

3. Conduct classes in a safe and professional manner.

4. Communicate clearly and effectively with students of all ages.

5. Provide motivational and corrective feedback.

6. Plan and organize courses, including the use of block and lesson plans.

7. Ensure participants' safety during class time.

8. Report any unsafe situations or conditions to the Swimming Pool Supervisor.

9. Report any damage to the facility or equipment, incidents, and injuries using appropriate forms in an accurate and timely manner.

10.Communicate any pertinent concerns or problems regarding courses or students to the Swimming Pool Supervisor.

11.Enforce and educate participants of the rules and policies of Renton School District.

12.Know and respond quickly to emergency situations and be able to implement appropriate Emergency Action Plans.

13.Work positively with the facility staff to provide a safe place for the public.

14.Assist other instructors.

15.Adhere to bloodborne pathogen training and safety standards.

16.Attend scheduled staff trainings.

17.Provide quality customer service for the patrons and staff.

18.Complete any assignments issued by the Swimming Pool Supervisor.

ABILITY TO

1. Perform strenuous activity

2. Perform duties involving physical labor, such as bending, kneeling, standing, reaching, climbing, stooping, squatting, pushing, twisting and swimming

3. Assist during emergency situations

4. Lift 50 pounds

5. Swim at a minimum of the American Red Cross Youth 5 skill level

QUALIFICATIONS

1. American Red Cross Certifications in CPR/AED and First Aid preferred (District will provide training)

2. Must be at least 15 years of age

3. Work effectively and communicate with the public and co-workers in a positive, "service" related manner.

4. Follow written and oral instructions

5. Possess knowledge of aquatic programs and safety procedures preferred
