Pharmacy Manager, Hematology/Oncology

POSITION SUMMARY: The Pharmacy Manager of Hematology/Oncology is responsible for leading, supporting, and managing the oncology pharmacy team at Boston Medical Center. The Manager develops strategies and initiatives to improve patient care and satisfaction, sets department‑wide goals, ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, and maintains the highest standards of patient care and safety while managing pharmacy staff. Position: Pharmacy Manager Department: Hematology/Oncology Schedule: Full Time Essential Responsibilities / Duties: Operational Management Manage daily pharmacy operations and ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations as well as organizational policies and procedures. Develop, implement, and maintain policies, procedures, and SOPs to support safe, efficient, and high‑quality pharmacy services. Oversee medication management processes, including procurement, preparation, storage, and distribution to ensure accuracy and safety in all settings. Assist with project management, including planning, execution, stakeholder engagement, and presenting findings to senior leadership. Oversee high‑cost drug utilization for ambulatory areas within hematology/oncology and other high‑cost specialty drugs. Provide on‑call support as required, maintaining readiness to address urgent pharmacy operational and clinical needs. Ensure compliance with accreditation standards and support audits and regulatory inspections as needed. Maintain strong self‑management skills, working with little to no supervision and proactively identifying issues or opportunities for improvement. Leadership & Human Resource Management Supervise and provide leadership to pharmacy staff, including pharmacists, pharmacy liaisons, and support personnel. Manage human resource functions—recruitment, performance evaluations, staff development, training, orientation, scheduling, and disciplinary actions when necessary. Create and maintain a healthy work environment where staff feel supported, accountable, and engaged in organizational initiatives. Engage with the department by managing upward, owning team decisions, and supporting departmental and organizational initiatives. Hold self and others to the highest ethical standards, acting with honor above all. Schedule regular meetings with direct reports and communicate regularly with interdisciplinary leadership teams. Stay current with trends and developments in pharmacy practice and healthcare. Financial & Budget Management Participate in budget development and financial management, identifying cost‑saving opportunities and managing drug budgets effectively. Support financial processes such as forecasting needs and conducting financial assessments of value. Manage productivity with a focus on schedule creation and management, including knowledge of metrics, real‑time performance awareness, and proactive adjustment to meet productivity standards. Recommend strategies for staffing optimization, such as adjusting FTEs, utilizing part‑time personnel, and employing per diem pools. Clinical & Educational Collaboration Collaborate with hematology and oncology clinical teams to develop and implement clinical programs that enhance patient care and optimize therapeutic outcomes. Develop and implement training programs for pharmacy staff, the PGY2 oncology pharmacy resident, and students to ensure clinical and operational competency. Train and mentor pharmacy staff according to defined outcome expectations and responsibilities, supporting education and maximizing professional potential. Quality Assurance & Process Improvement Lead quality assurance initiatives and process improvement projects to enhance efficiency and safety within the pharmacy department. Utilize the hospital’s values as the basis for decision‑making and to facilitate the division’s mission. Work with the medication safety officer to review and follow up on safety reports and concerns related to the area. Job Requirements Required Education and Experience Completed a degree in Pharmacy (Bachelor’s or PharmD). PGY‑1 Pharmacy Residency and PGY‑2 Pharmacy Specialty or HSPAL Residency, or PGY‑1 Residency plus2 years of pertinent experience, or4years of pertinent experience. Preferred Education and Experience Advanced degree (Master’s, MBA) and/or completion of an accredited residency highly desired. Certifications, Licenses, Registrations Required Licensed as a pharmacist in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts by the hire date. Preferred Certifications, Licenses, Registrations None specified. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs) Comprehensive understanding of all procedures, systems, and equipment used by pharmacists and technicians. High analytical ability, organizational and personal management skills to serve as a role model for operations. Ability to evaluate current pharmacy services and procedures, gather data from multiple sources, and apply an evaluative research process. Experience working with, revising, and implementing information systems. High interpersonal skills to collaborate with healthcare personnel, resolve situations, and communicate effectively. Proficiency with standard office software (MSWord, Excel, web browsers). Experience with pharmacy and clinical database systems (QS1, Centricity, Meditech, Cerner, EPIC, SCM) is a plus. Compensation Range: $112,000.00 – $162,500.00. This range is based on minimum qualifications and considers education, experience, skills, certifications, internal equity, and market competitiveness.
