As a Power Systems Field Commissioning Technician, you’ll be the on-site problem-solver customers trust when their electrical infrastructure needs care. Your day moves from diagnosing a stubborn trip on a medium-voltage breaker to verifying PLC I/O during a startup, to walking a customer through safe operation procedures—always with safety and quality at the forefront.

What a typical week can look like

• Travel to customer facilities to troubleshoot, maintain, and repair electrical equipment including transformers, circuit breakers, LV/MV switchgear, and PLC-controlled systems.
• Run diagnostics to isolate faults, perform corrective actions, and restore systems to service quickly and safely.
• Support startups and commissioning activities, confirming functionality and alignment with customer specifications.
• Serve as the on-site point of contact—addressing technical concerns, answering questions, and ensuring a positive customer experience.
• Provide basic end-user training on operation and preventive maintenance.
• Capture field data, test reports, and performance feedback to inform continuous improvement.
• Track time, work performed, and parts usage; coordinate with teammates to meet deadlines and service SLAs.
• Leverage remote troubleshooting tools when appropriate to reduce downtime and expedite resolutions.

• Participate in ongoing safety training and keep certifications current.

Qualifications Education

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Associate’s degree in electrical engineering or related discipline preferred.
• NFPA 70E, OSHA 30, or similar technical credentials are a plus.

Experience

• 3–5 years in field service focused on power systems, electrical equipment, or industrial controls.
• Hands-on troubleshooting and maintenance with transformers and circuit breakers.

Skills & Competencies

• Expert problem-solver with strong diagnostic instincts.
• Comfortable using field service management tools, ERP platforms, and Microsoft Office (Excel, Word).
• Clear communicator capable of translating technical concepts for diverse audiences.
• Self-directed and organized; able to prioritize effectively in a fast-moving environment.

Extra Competencies

• Experience working across low- and medium-voltage systems.
• Familiarity with PLCs, SCADA platforms, and protective relays is beneficial.

Other Requirements

• Frequent travel with overnight stays to customer sites and JDC locations across the U.S.
• Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
• Strong commitment to safety and customer satisfaction.
• Proficiency using industry-standard test gear (multimeters, breaker test sets, etc.).

Physical Requirements & Work Environment General Physical Demands

• Stand and walk for long durations (up to 8–12 hours per day) on active job sites.
• Bend, kneel, squat, crouch, and crawl within confined or restricted spaces.
• Climb ladders and stairs; access elevated work areas.
• Work indoors and outdoors in dusty/dirty industrial settings and in varying weather conditions and extreme temperatures.

Lifting & Material Handling

• Frequently lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
• Occasionally move up to 75 lbs with assistance or mechanical aids.
• Push, pull, and maneuver equipment such as switchgear components, cable reels, and test sets.

Manual Dexterity & Tool Use

• Safely operate hand tools, power tools, and electrical test instruments.
• Fine motor skills for terminations, wiring, and precision adjustments.
• Work while wearing gloves and arc-flash PPE; adhere to all PPE requirements including arc-flash suits, hard hats, safety glasses, safety boots, and fall protection.

Vision & Hearing

• Visual acuity sufficient to read schematics, labels, and digital indicators.
• Ability to differentiate wire colors.
• Hear and respond to alarms, equipment sounds, verbal instructions, and safety communications.

Work Environment Conditions

• Exposure to energized and de-energized electrical hazards.
• High noise areas requiring hearing protection.
• Dust, dirt, and conditions typical of construction and energized facilities.
• Full PPE compliance at all times (arc-flash suits, hard hats, safety glasses, safety boots, fall protection).

Travel & Schedule Demands

• Frequent regional or national travel.
• Overtime, weekend, and on-call rotations as needed.
• Extended shifts during commissioning and startup windows.
