Student Management Specialist (SMS)

Job Summary A Student Management Specialist uses restorative practices to build and maintain relationships between students, teachers, and parents. They help students grow and improve behavior while creating individual interventions. They also plan and maintain school-wide systems, structures, and discipline, and serve as ambassadors for the community, believing passionately in the potential of students. Responsibilities and Tasks Assists the principal in the overall administration of the middle school program. Serves as a resource for teachers and staff with concerns about student attendance, development, or discipline. Coordinates efforts with guidance, police liaison officers, school psychologists, and/or social workers to meet with students and parents to improve attendance and behavior. Consults with families via conference or communication systems concerning attendance and behavior. Resolves student behavior concerns fairly and timely, maintaining records of disciplinary or referral actions. Monitors the physical plant of the school and grounds, following up on student vandalism. Assists in interpreting district programs related to student substance abuse and truancy. Recommends appropriate revisions of policies and rules affecting student behavior. Supports strategies to improve student performance, attendance, and development. Assists in developing and administering campus control and security practices. Maintains active relationships with parents, families, and students. Assists in establishing rules for students in in‑school suspension/detention rooms. Responds to written and oral communication regarding development and discipline matters. Serves on committees and attends meetings as directed by the principal. Assumes responsibility when all administrators are out of the building. Performs other tasks and responsibilities within the overall scope of the position as assigned by the principal. Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree.
