Phlebotomist

The primary role of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations. This position is vital in ensuring efficient and accurate specimen collection and processing.

Responsibilities

• Perform blood draws and label specimens accurately.
• Centrifuge specimens and record maintenance data.
• Decontaminate and update patient information as needed.
• Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
• Explain the process of venipuncture and other specimen collection methods to patients in a clear and courteous manner.
• Demonstrate techniques using straight and butterfly needles.
• Understand and execute all physicians' orders.
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
• Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.
• Ensure 100% accuracy when checking test requisitions or computer labels against scripts.
• Package specimens for transport and store them according to required temperatures.
• Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
• Attend annual department trainings.
• Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.

Essential Skills

• Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment.
• Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
• High School Diploma or GED.
• 5-7 years of experience in phlebotomy.
• Strong venipuncture and blood draw skills.
• Experience working with a diverse patient population, including pediatric and geriatric patients.
• Comfortable with specimen collection, labeling, processing, and centrifugation.
• Strong customer service and communication skills.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Active California CPT I or CPT II certification required.
• Hands-on phlebotomy experience preferred.
• Experience drawing pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients preferred.
• Proficiency in infection-control procedures.
• Knowledge of medical terminology and order of draw.

Work Environment

This role is based in a fast-paced, patient-facing clinical and laboratory environment. Phlebotomists interact with pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients throughout the day, performing blood draws, specimen collection, labeling, processing, and centrifugation. The role requires strong customer service, attention to detail, and the ability to remain professional and compassionate with patients. This is a Contract position based out of Pleasanton, CA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $28.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
