Works on rotating shifts performing security patrols in assigned area, handles traffic control, investigation and first aid at accidents; detection, investigation and arrest of persons involved in crimes or misconduct. Carries out duties in conformance with Federal, State, County and City laws and ordinances. Works an assigned shift using own judgment in deciding course of action, being expected to handle difficult and emergency situations without assistance. Prepares a variety of reports and records, including calls for service, crimes criminal investigations, vehicle crashes, suspicious incidents, radar and LIDAR logs, and various other written reports. Patrols City streets, parks, commercial and residential areas to preserve the peace and enforce the law, control vehicular traffic, prevent or detect and investigate misconduct involving misdemeanors, felonies and other law violations. Responds to emergency radio calls and investigates accidents, robberies, civil disturbances, domestic disputes, fights, drunkenness, missing children, prowlers, abuse of drugs, etc. Takes appropriate law enforcement action. Undertakes community oriented and problem solving policing work with the aid of data-driven systems. Answers questions from the public on phone or in person such as project status, complaints, law interpretation, or refers to proper agency. Faces situations and is prepared to use deadly force when justified. Requests checks on car registrations, warrants, firearms, and does tickets, citation or tags for illegal violations. Monitors crime areas, makes business checks or vacation checks of private dwellings. Completes routine, non-emergency reports through preliminary investigations and reports, which include: interviewing suspects, witnesses, citizens, victims, specialists, and other individuals as necessary. Takes written and oral statements from victims, witnesses, and suspects. Develops leads and tips. Searches scene of crimes for physical evidence. Preserves and processes evidence. Analyzes and evaluates evidence and arrests offenders. Prepares case for giving testimony and testifies in court proceedings. Interrogates suspects and takes sworn statements, formal confessions or depositions; testifies at trials, hearings or grand juries. Coordinates activities with other officers or other City departments as needed, exchanges information with officers in other law enforcement agencies and obtains advice from the City Attorney, Court Administrator, and Municipal Prosecutor’s Office regarding cases, policies and procedures, as needed and assigned. Conducts field training. Maintains skills proficiency. Performs other related duties or specialty assignments as apparent or assigned. Ability to be licensed under the P.O.S.T. selection standards. Possession of, or ability to obtain an appropriate valid Minnesota Driver’s License.
