Primary Care Physician Family Medicine with Obstetrics (FMOB)

This position will be based at VCU Health Community Memorial Hospital in South Hill, Virginia. VCU Health Community Memorial Hospital is a small, rural community hospital that provides a wide range of subspecialty care to a large region. In 2017, VCU Health System built a beautiful, brand-new hospital that is both aesthetically and clinically spectacular. The family medicine residency clinic is attached to the hospital. Our department provides newborn nursery and inpatient pediatrics coverage. Current inpatient volumes are approximately 300 deliveries and 50 pediatrics admissions per calendar year. High acuity cases are transferred to a higher level of care. July 1, 2025, CMH welcomed its first class of family medicine residents. The residents spend their first year of training at our main campus in Richmond, approximately 75 miles to our north, and spend their second and third years in South Hill.

Founded in 1970, the Department of Family Medicine and Population Health at VCU has a long and proud history of training medical students and resident physicians. Our department houses our family medicine medical student education programs, including a highly rated clerkship and two longitudinal, four-year track programs. Our department is one of the top ten in the nation for family medicine research. We have four affiliated family medicine residency programs at various locations around the Commonwealth of Virginia in addition to our new VCU Health Community Memorial Hospital Family Medicine Residency, which will graduate its first class in 2027.

This position is a Family Medicine Obstetrics (FMOB) role, integrating outpatient primary care and comprehensive obstetrical services, with optional inpatient medicine and newborn care, within a rural training environment. The physician will serve as a residency faculty member in the Family Medicine Residency, supporting development of a robust FMOB training.

To practice broad scope rural family medicine and to train the next generation of family medicine physicians in Southside Virginia. This position includes clinical faculty appointment to the Department of Family Medicine and Population Health.

Clinical Responsibilities (100%):

• Maintain a practice at the Family Medicine Residency Clinic through resident precepting and an optional outpatient panel (based on outpatient Family Medicine FTE).
• Provide full-spectrum FMOB care including prenatal, labor and delivery, postpartum, and newborn care.
• Participate in shared obstetrics call coverage.
• Optional participation in inpatient pediatric care and newborn nursery coverage.
• Optional participation in adult inpatient medicine.

Teaching & Academic Responsibilities:

• Precept residents and medical students in family medicine and obstetrics settings.
• Serve as faculty for FMOB curriculum development.
• Support development of rural FMOB training.

Minimum Qualifications:

• MD/DO with eligibility for Virginia licensure.
• Completion of accredited Family Medicine residency.
• Board Certified/Eligible.
• Demonstrated competency in obstetrics including vaginal delivery.
• Experience in providing direct patient care to underserved populations across multiple settings
• Willing and able to care for patients in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. This position will include light newborn nursery and inpatient pediatrics call (facility currently has approx. 300 deliveries/year). Adult inpatient and pediatric/newborn services are optional for this position (facility currently has approximately 50 pediatric admissions/year). We incorporate proctoring as part of our onboarding process, so current inpatient privileges are not required.
• Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications:

• FMOB fellowship or equivalent experience.
• Experience with assisted delivery and/or cesarean section is strongly preferred.
• Rural practice and teaching experience.
• Experience in providing direct patient care and/or residency training in rural settings
• Direct experience in the medical education of learners such as residents, medical students, inter-professional learners
• Confidence and willingness to be a faculty lead in one or more of the following:
• Care of pregnant women including antenatal, labor and delivery including operative management, and postpartum care
• Care of adults in the inpatient setting
• Care of children in the inpatient setting
• Mental Health treatment in the primary care setting
• Substance abuse treatment to include medically assisted therapy
• Primary care Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) and/or specialized procedural training in emergency, inpatient and outpatient setting
• Leadership experience, preferably of a multi-site primary care group.
