Clinical Support Tech I - Medical / Surgical Unit *This position qualifies for our UNC Health Johnston Incentive Program, please ask your recruiter for more information. We are located on 3rd Floor Medical / Surgical Unit in a 24‑bed unit. Patients may have chest pain, CHF, syncope, strokes, diabetes, COPD, and other med‑surgical diagnoses, with occasional surgical cases. Patient ratios: 1 RN to 5‑6 patients; day shift includes 3 nursing assistants and a secretary; night shift has 3 nursing assistants. Summary Responds to professional caregivers in patient care delivery, patient and equipment transport, setting up and maintaining patient rooms, and performing clerical, transcription, and maintenance functions on the patient care unit desk area. Responsibilities Assists physicians and other health care providers with routine examinations and procedures and procures equipment and supplies. Critically reviews patient care documentation, notes significant changes in the patient’s condition and reports immediately to a registered nurse or physician. Performs clerical tasks including organizing workload, greeting and directing visitors, researching information requested by nurses and physicians, reviewing orders for logic and clarity, revising orders upon request, answering the telephone and patient call lights, transcribing physician orders, and maintaining medical records. Also performs routine quality assurance audits, safety checks, and inventory of supplies, and provides administrative support including PI audits and data entry. Provides clinical support assistance such as cleaning the work area, maintaining office equipment, troubleshooting common software and hardware problems, changing linens, checking supply inventory, re‑stocking supplies, transporting patients, supplies, and specimens, and assisting in the orientation of new employees and students. Delivers direct personal care to patients as outlined in the plan of care activities—bathing, dressing, feeding, ambulation assistance, measuring and recording vital signs, height, and weight. May be responsible for specimen collection, skin preps/scrubs, catheter care, capillary blood glucose checks, simple wound care, range of motion exercises, and/or postural drainage. Reinforces routine teaching given to patients by the registered nurse or physician, documents patient understanding, and distributes patient education materials as requested. Education Requirements High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) Licensure / Certification Requirements Listed as a Nursing Assistant I by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Basic Life Support (BLS) certification Professional Experience Requirements Prior experience not required. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Requirements Fluent in verbal and written English language. Capability to develop computer skills if not already competent.
