POSITION : Camp Counselor I/ Co-Navigator REPORTS TO : Director, Camp

The LightHouse is currently in a period of growth, increasing our capacity to serve more low-vision and blind clients. *Blind/visually impaired strongly encouraged to apply. OVERVIEW: As a residential camp for the blind, counselors are responsible for the overall provision of a traditional camp experience to all blind and visually impaired campers. This includes but not limited to: inventing new blind-friendly programming, motivating campers to use non-visual techniques, adapting all activities so that all campers can participate fully regardless of their level of vision. Counselors should encourage active participation in camp meals, clean-up and other daily functions through fun activities. Counselors provide supervision to recreational activities, create educational experiences, promote independence and supervise the health and safety of children and adults. Applicants must also have the ability to work with campers that have secondary disabilities (developmental, hearing impairments and/or mobility restrictions). QUALIFICATIONS:

- Must be 18 years of age or older
- High School graduate
- Some college education preferred
- Current First Aid and CPR certifications
- Previous work in a camp, school, or community service setting
- Experience working with individuals who are blind/visually impaired preferred
- Fluent in ASL

- Camper Supervision & Development
- Assist in the supervision, guidance, and organization of campers in their living units, activities, and throughout camp to support positive camper experiences.
- Apply principles of youth development and blindness awareness to foster strong camper relationships, inclusivity, and empowerment.
- Ensure campers are supervised at all times and adhere to safety guidelines.
- Program Leadership & Implementation
- Assist in developing and implementing camp activities in alignment with the camp's mission and outcomes.
- Lead and support instructional activities across various program areas.
- Engage actively in all assigned program areas, ensuring activities align with camper interests and abilities.
- Support specialized camp activities, including waterfront, nature exploration, arts and crafts, and all-camp events.
- Health, Safety & Well-Being
- Maintain high standards of health and safety for campers and staff.
- Provide daily care and ensure the well-being of campers, recognizing and addressing personal health needs.
- Ensure campers receive medications as directed by the health care manager.
- Identify and address camper or staff concerns, reporting to the camp health manager or director when necessary.
- Monitor and maintain proper use, care, and maintenance of camp equipment and facilities, reporting repairs as needed.
- Role Modeling & Leadership
- Serve as a positive role model for campers and staff through behavior, attitude, and adherence to camp policies.
- Uphold and enforce all safety, security, and camp procedural guidelines.
- Demonstrate good sportsmanship, respect, and responsibility in all camp activities.
- Collaboration & Communication
- Provide verbal and written feedback as needed for evaluations and camper development.
- Maintain clear, positive communication with campers, staff, and leadership.
- Attend and participate in regular staff meetings.
- Camp Engagement & Special Events
- Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, leading and supporting as assigned.
- Assist in planning and supervising evening programs, special events, overnights, and all-camp activities.
- Stay informed on best practices through ongoing learning and engagement in instructional materials.
- Read, understand and adhere to 100% of agency policies and procedures
- Complete 100% of job responsibilities and assigned tasks efficiently by prioritizing work as needed to meet deadlines, ensuring safety, wellbeing and positive experience for campers.
- Consistently maintain a positive and respectful attitude in 100% of interactions with staff and campers while conducting ourselves professionally on and off the job as representatives of LightHouse.
- Consistently report to work on time and be ready to begin performing our assigned duties and responsibilities with no more than two exceptions per camp session.
- Work productively or stay engaged with campers during at least 95% of program activities, all camp activities, cabin time and all other time that is not designated as time off.
- Communicate regularly with supervisors, campers, and colleagues in our immediate teams and across the agency, ensuring 100% of verbal and written communication is clear, professional, effective, and done in a timely manner.
- Maintain 100% confidentiality of individual health, behavior concerns, and other personal information of campers and staff.
- Consistently learn and communicate a blindness-positive philosophy by applying current best practices in 100% of interactions, as assessed through regular supervisor, participant, and peer feedback.
- Consistently demonstrate respect and inclusivity by using culturally appropriate language and behavior in 100% of interactions, as assessed through regular supervisor, participant, and peer feedback
- Must be willing to live on camp premises
- Must be able to lift 70 pounds
- Ability to enforce safety and emergency procedures
- Ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity
- Physical ability to respond appropriately to situation requiring first aid
- Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness or injury)
- Possess the endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers
