Educational Diagnostician

The Louisiana Special Schools are experiencing a critical shortage of certified teachers, school counselors, interpreters and educators of the Deaf or hard of hearing and Visually Impaired. The LA SPECIAL SCHOOL DISTRICT is seeking applicants for Educational Diagnostician. This position will be located at the SSD District Wide Services.

To accurately assess the educational needs of students and function as a member of a multi-disciplinary team in accordance with guidelines set forth in Bulletin 1508 and regulations implementing LRS 17:1941 et.seq.

Responsibilities include providing training and consultation to SSD teachers and paraprofessionals in academic intervention support; administering assessments; attending SBLC and IEP meetings as needed; and conducting interviews. The Educational Diagnostician also collects data and compiles it as needed for the department, district, state and federal reports.

Qualifications include certification as an Educational Diagnostician, according to the LDOE Bulletin 746. A master's degree in education, preferably education of the deaf and/or visually impaired, is required. Possession of the necessary academic training and experience to administer and interpret diagnostic techniques to be used with all types of hearing impaired and/or visually impaired children is also required. Experience administering assessments and writing evaluations is necessary.

Program Management Responsibilities include exhibiting knowledge of special education rules and regulations associated with implementation of state and federal laws. Apply laws, policies, regulations and procedures fairly, consistently, wisely and compassionately. Exhibit understanding of children with disabilities and their needs and demonstrate awareness of specialists, agencies and organizations that serve children with disabilities and their families. Communicate effectively, both verbally and in written format. Demonstrate effective and appropriate office management skills such as planning and organizing. Maintain complete and accurate records and exercise confidentiality of information in accordance with the law. Exercise good judgement in making decisions. Provide or assist in the provision of in-service training of school or facility personnel on such topics as pupil appraisal, IEP, classroom management, intervention strategies and other areas of expertise. Maintain a positive relationship with professional associates, the community, the parents of students and state and local agencies.

Programmatic Responsibilities include reviewing evaluation records of newly admitted students to determine special education needs. Serve as evaluation coordinator and an evaluation representative on the IEP committee. Serve as a member of a multi-disciplinary team, administer assessments for the identification of students' needs and provide written reports within the required timeline. Conduct parent, teacher and student interviews and observations required for an evaluation. Assist with selecting interventions and serve on the SBLC committee to determine whether a student is in need of special education services. Provide assistance with IEP development and meetings. Maintain case records, reports and all necessary documentation in order to provide for continuity of services and program accountability. Assist with Special Education Monitoring. Complete all required pupil appraisal and related reports for SSD or the LDOE. Develop, train and monitor the use of academic interventions. Conduct research regarding best practices in assessment selection and interpretation. Interpret assessment findings to parents, teachers, the student and others involved in the provision of special education services. Perform duties such as child search, functional vision assessments, academic assessments, teacher and parent interviews, and technology assessments. Attend professional development as required.
