School Nurse – RNReports To: Principal / District NurseJob Goal: To support, promote, and implement a comprehensive program of health services for the assigned location(s)Minimum Qualifications:Possesses a current license (RN) to practice nursing in the State of AlabamaThree (3) years nursing experience, preferably in pediatrics, community health, or acute carePrior experience working in a school health setting preferredExcellent organizational, time-management, and problem-solving skillsAbility to work effectively in a team environmentStrong interpersonal skills, including oral and written communication skillsAbility to proficiently use current technologyCurrent certification in CPR/AED instruction or willingness to obtainAbility to meet suitability criteria under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457Such alternatives to the above qualifications as state, federal, and local law and the Board may requireDuties and Responsibilities:Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, mission, goals, and prioritiesPractices within the defined limits of the Alabama Nurse Practice Act, the American Nurses Association Standards of Clinical Nursing Practice, and the Standards of School Nursing Practice of the National Association of School NursesComplies with the Alabama Department of Health regulations, District policy, and the ALSDE guidelinesPerforms screening procedures as required by the Alabama Department of Health, Alabama Education Agency, and District policy and reports findings as directedServes as health advocate for the studentProvides temporary and emergency care for sick and injured students or employees according to District policy and ALSDE guidelinesFollows notification protocol in cases of accident or illnessServes as a health liaison between school, physician, parent/guardian, and communityAssesses student problems, implements the nursing process, and makes appropriate referrals, working with students, teachers, parents, family physicians, and other community health providers as neededCoordinates a system of administration and management of medications administered at schoolAdministers medication according to District policy and proceduresReviews, evaluates, and maintains immunizations recordsMaintains complete and accurate health records on each studentSubmits timely reports as requested by the District NurseProvides nursing care for students requiring special health procedures (i.e. catheterization, tube feedings, etc.)Maintains adequate supplies in the health officeReports potential school health/safety hazards as directedParticipates in IEP development, child abuse investigations, and other school committees as requestedPromotes wellness and provides information to facilitate healthy life styles among students and employeesProvides health counseling and teaching on an individual basisContributes to the health education program as a resource person in both planning and teaching capacities, working with the principal and teachersMaintains ongoing communication with the Principal and District Nurse regarding health problems and related mattersMaintains certification in CPR/AED instructorParticipates in staff development meetings and professional growth activitiesCompletes mandated continuing nursing education requirements to maintain RN license; keeps well informed of the latest trends in health and educationAdheres to local Board policies, administrative procedures, and other like directives, as well as state, federal, and local lawsPerforms other job-related duties as assigned by Supervisor(s)This job description describes the general nature and level of work performed by employees assigned to this position.
