Overview The Nurse Practitioner (NP) possesses specialized skills and knowledge to perform physical examinations, document data, conduct diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, order and schedule laboratory studies and consultations, prescribe interventions and medications, and provide direct patient care. The NP contributes to excellence in patient care, research, teaching, consulting and provides leadership within the organization and advance practice profession. Essential Duties Conduct in‑depth interviews with patients and/or families, construct comprehensive medical histories, perform initial and periodic physical examinations, and explore patients’ interpretations of health needs. Identify and treat patients’ diseases; manage treatment of hospitalized patients. Directly perform or order appropriate diagnostic studies and interpret finished results. Develop and implement long‑ and short‑term treatment plans. Perform procedures such as specimen collection, injections, immunizations, lumbar punctures, skin biopsies, suturing, wound care, and management of trauma or infection conditions. Write orders to adjust medication, subject to physician counter‑signing. Initiate consultations and monitor scheduling of patients for special tests. Identify records of patient progress, update and summarize charts, change orders when appropriate, and notify responsible physician of changes in patient condition. Instruct and counsel patients and families regarding preventive care, medical and psychological issues, and use of prescribed treatments and drugs. Act as liaison with governmental agencies such as the Centers for Disease Control and the National Institute of Health. Assist with medical research projects, follow research protocols, and obtain Institutional Review Board approval for treatment protocols. Research community resources for patient referrals and recommend most appropriate resources based on patient needs. Maintain compliance with university and department policies, quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control, and accreditation and regulatory requirements. Participate in in‑service education programs and professional associations. Required Qualifications Master’s degree (MSN) from an accredited school of nursing. Five (5) years of combined education/experience in clinical nursing. Excellent communication skills; proficient in speaking, reading and writing English. Knowledge of medical procedures and conditions; ability to understand, follow and perform duties successfully. Preferred Qualifications Bilingual in Spanish (preferable). Required Licenses and Certifications Registered Nurse (RN) – CA Board of Registered Nursing. Nurse Practitioner (NP) – CA Board of Registered Nursing. Nurse Practitioner Furnisher – CA DCA; current license to furnish medications in California. DEA Certificate (Schedule II‑V controlled substances). National Board Certification in NP specialty accredited by ABSNC or NCCA. Basic Life Support (BLS) – American Heart Association. Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) – American Heart Association. Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) – required if applicable. For acute‑care or ambulatory infusion settings: ANCC or AACN Acute Care NP or Adult Gerontology Acute Care NP certification upon hire. For Nevada (LasVegas) locations: NP specialty certification (ACNP, ANP, FNP, or AGNP), unrestricted DEA Certificate with Nevada address, Nevada Board of Pharmacy license, Nevada RN license, and USC credentialing within six months of hire.
