Special Education Bus Attendant

Purpose: Provide support on Special Education buses (SPED) including assisting students during transport daily to and from school and special activities (as needed); ensuring orderly loading and unloading of students; ensuring safe evacuation of students from the SPED bus in an emergency; Maintaining a seating chart of students; and ensuring the safety and sanitation of the SPED bus. Essential Functions:
Job Requirements: Minimum Qualification Skills, Knowledge, Ability Skills: Required skills include performing multiple tasks with a potential to upgrade skills to meet changing job conditions including adhering to safety practices, administering first aid/CPR, adhering to school system and state policies and codes, preparing and maintaining accurate records, and operating equipment used to transport special needs students. Knowledge: Required knowledge in ability to perform basic math, understand written procedures, write routine documents, speak clearly and understand multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge based competencies include safety practices and procedures, emergency evacuation procedures, first aid/CPR, recognize health hazards and apply health standards, follow state regulations and laws as they pertain to the transportation of students, and basic understanding of child behavior. Ability: Required abilities include operation of job related equipment, working with others in a wide variety of circumstances, problem solving in a wide variety of circumstances, being attentive to detail, displaying tact and courtesy, establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with others and maintaining confidentiality. (Maintaining student confidentiality at all times is vital!) Responsibilities: Include working under direct supervision, following all procedures and policies, attending in-service training activities, maintain a current First Aid and CPR certification. Working Environment: This job's functions require the following physical demands: Significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching and significant fine finger dexterity. Experience: Job related experience is desired but not required
Education: High school diploma or equivalent Certifications Required: CPR and First Aid training Clearances: Pre-employment drug screening and pre-employment background check
- Assists driver in emergency situations
- Assists students in safe loading and unloading during normal transport and emergency situations
- Monitors students with special needs until released to a teacher, instructional assistant, parent, etc. for the purpose of safe transportation for all students
- Prepares reports as needed: seating charts, incident reports, office referrals, time cards for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, conveying information, and/or complying with established guidelines, and documenting hours worked
- Secures students and/or their equipment (e.g. wheelchairs, restraints, seat belts, operating lift) for the purpose of ensuring student safety
- Attend meetings, in-services training, workshops for the purpose of learning best practices to perform job functions
- Performs other assigned duties for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the SPED team on bus
- Other duties as assigned by the Transportation Supervisor
