The Laboratory Assistant I (Outpatient Phlebotomist) position supports outpatient laboratory daily operations by providing excellence in patient services, proper phlebotomy specimen collection, alliquoting, complete accuracy in Epic registration, centrifuge usage, drug screens, error‑free documentation and overall compliance with regulatory standards. The Lab Assistant I role is essential to maintaining efficient workflow, patient satisfaction and quality laboratory results for subsequent patient care. Roles and Responsibilities Performs proper venipuncture and post‑care of phlebotomy site along with labeling each specimen with two forms of ID with zero labeling errors. Accurate patient registration, requisitioning, and operational fluency in Epic. Proper labeling, processing and preparation of patient specimens for laboratory testing. Completes specimen batches in a timely manner for courier pickup or sends specimens through the tube system properly. Communicates outpatient needs for adequate inventory and is proficient with system reporting requests. Completes all documentation requirements including outpatient daily, weekly and monthly checklists. Follows organizational policies and maintains a compliant environment including adherence to all laboratory procedures, HIPAA standards, infection control and safety guidelines. Participates in quality assurance programs and maintains all requirements for departmental workflow. Maintains educational requirements, outpatient in‑services and assigned training as it relates to outpatient lab workflows. Is flexible and willing to make changes for the benefit of the team. Required Skills and Experience High school diploma or equivalent. Vocational phlebotomy (or related) course/program, or 2 years of working phlebotomy experience. Preferred Skills and Experience Problem‑solving ability and attention to detail. Good written and oral communication skills. Ability to prioritize work, manage time wisely and adjust to changes in work volumes. Physical Requirements May require heavy lifting (up to 50 pounds) and carrying supplies. The position is frequently in motion and requires repetitive use of hands (e.g., computer keyboard usage), sitting, squatting, walking or standing for long periods of time, up to 6 hours per day. Location and Travel Requirements Onsite at Cayuga Medical Center, 101 Dates Drive, Ithaca, NY 14850, with ability to work at other area locations as scheduled or assigned. Shift: Full‑time, Days FLEX. Anticipated schedule to be assigned during Outpatient Lab Operational Hours of 7 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday and Saturdays 6 am to 1 pm. Rotating Saturdays and holidays per department and patient scheduling needs. 0–10% travel can be expected in this role. Pay Range Disclosure Standard rate of $17.79 to $24.04 per hour plus benefits.
