Job Title Admissions Counselor Job Summary The Admissions Counselor plays an integral role in counseling and assisting prospective students and their families in the college admissions process. The position includes carrying out daily operations of the office, developing programs and projects as assigned, and often involves extensive travel, group and individual presentations, and evaluation and selection of applicants. This full‑time role requires 8–10 weeks of in‑person travel across the United States each year, with potential for weekend and evening work during the fall and spring recruiting periods. Key Responsibilities Serve as the first point of contact for prospective families, maintaining strong ties throughout the admissions cycle and promoting programs to families, counselors, faculty, staff, and alumni. Conduct market research and recruitment in assigned geographic areas, including personal correspondence and follow‑up within 24 hours of meetings. Plan and execute recruitment events, create travel itineraries, and maintain territory management reports. Represent Furman University to students, parents, college counselors, alumni, and other constituents within designated recruiting regions. Travel 8–10 weeks in the fall and as necessary in the spring; plan and prepare all travel logistics. Host virtual recruiting events such as virtual high school visits, college fairs, and individual meetings when in‑person contact is not possible. Develop healthy working relationships with the admissions team and assist with projects and tasks as needed. Participate in all recruitment programming, including on‑campus and virtual events. Read and evaluate applications for admission; maintain confidentiality and respect throughout the review process. Build strong relationships with high school counselors, community organizations, educational consultants, alumni, and other external constituencies. Conduct group and individual information sessions, counsel candidates for admission, and assist with campus tours when required. Monitor the Hartness Admissions Center and provide excellent customer service to guests, covering front desk duties as needed. Be available for other duties as assigned; the job classification may include tasks beyond those listed. Qualifications and Requirements Bachelor’s degree required. Valid U.S. driver’s license required. Bilingualism is desirable. Strong public speaking and interpersonal skills; comfortable presenting to diverse audiences. Enthusiasm for creating cross‑campus collaboration to support prospective students from early engagement through enrollment. Excellent time‑management, organizational, and communication skills; ability to promptly correspond with a variety of constituencies. Self‑motivated, capable of solving new challenges, and able to work independently as well as part of a team. Demonstrated strong organization, dependability, and excellent verbal and written communication skills. Responsibilities Daily contact with work unit members and supervisor to plan, coordinate, and present information related to mutual goals. Frequent interaction with other departments, the general public, prospective students, parents, counselors, and alumni to exchange factual information and explain rules, regulations, and practices. Responsibility for Final Decisions Responsible for own work and may assist or instruct others, including student workers. Tasks involve multiple procedures with interrelated processes or steps, and require choosing appropriate options or procedures based on established rules. Reports To Senior Assistant Director of Admissions Work Conditions Primarily performed under usual office conditions; student‑facing; occasional work from home permissible at certain times. Requires some evening and weekend work throughout the year, mainly during fall and spring recruiting and yield seasons. Frequent communication with direct supervisor about recruitment strategies, trends, and proposals for adjustments.
