Shipping & Logistics Manager

Job Title: Shipping & Logistics Manager Location: Loganville, GA (Multi-Facility Oversight) Department: Operations Reports To: Plant Manager (or COO) Position Overview: The Shipping Manager is responsible for planning, coordinating, and executing all outbound shipments from the fabrication facility to ensure steel is delivered safely, efficiently, and on schedule. This role serves as the primary link between Production, Project Management, Purchasing, and Field Operations to ensure customer schedules are met while maximizing trucking efficiency and maintaining inventory accuracy. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced structural steel fabrication environment and understands how shipping decisions directly impact fabrication, erection, and project profitability. Key Responsibilities: Shipping & Logistics: Develop daily and weekly shipping schedules. Coordinate all outbound deliveries with Project Managers and Production. Schedule company and third-party trucking. Ensure loads meet customer delivery requirements and erection sequencing. Maximize trailer utilization while minimizing freight costs. Coordinate special permits, escorts, and oversized loads when required. Verify all shipping documentation is complete before departure. Yard & Material Management: Oversee finished goods staging. Maintain organized laydown and shipping yard. Ensure material is accurately identified and ready for shipment. Coordinate movement of fabricated steel from production to shipping. Minimize double-handling of material. Maintain inventory accuracy for finished steel. Production Coordination: Attend production scheduling meetings. Communicate shipping priorities to production supervisors. Identify bottlenecks affecting scheduled deliveries. Coordinate loading priorities with fabrication completion. Ensure project milestones align with shipping commitments. Customer & Project Coordination: Communicate shipment schedules with Project Managers. Coordinate just-in-time deliveries with customers and field teams. Resolve shipping conflicts before they impact project schedules. Provide shipment status updates and tracking information. Assist with recovery plans for schedule changes. Safety & Compliance: Ensure OSHA compliance throughout shipping operations. Verify proper rigging and load securement. Maintain DOT compliance for shipping documentation. Conduct yard safety inspections. Ensure forklifts, cranes, and loading equipment are properly maintained. Team Leadership: Lead shipping personnel and yard crews. Assign daily work priorities. Coach and develop employees. Conduct performance evaluations. Promote a culture of accountability, organization, and safety. Required Qualifications: 5+ years of shipping, logistics, or operations experience. 3+ years in a supervisory role. Experience within structural steel fabrication, heavy manufacturing, precast concrete, or industrial construction preferred. Strong understanding of truck loading and freight coordination. Experience scheduling multiple concurrent projects. Ability to read fabrication drawings and shipping lists. Excellent organizational skills. Strong computer proficiency including Microsoft Office and ERP software. Ability to communicate effectively with customers, field personnel, and production teams. Preferred (Bonus) Qualifications: Structural steel fabrication experience. Knowledge of AISC fabrication practices. Experience with Tekla, FabSuite, or similar ERP systems. Familiarity with DOT regulations. Crane and rigging knowledge. Forklift certification (or ability to obtain). Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions. Ability to climb trailers and inspect loads. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally. What Success Looks Like: Within the first 12 months, the Shipping Manager will: Establish a reliable weekly shipping plan aligned with production. Improve communication between Production, PM Team, and Shipping. Increase truck utilization while reducing freight costs. Maintain an organized, efficient shipping yard. Consistently deliver steel on time and in erection sequence.
