Youth Advisor – Violence Reduction Program (VRP) Job Code: 2024-MPS-002 Location: Milwaukee Department: MPS FT/PT Status: Full Time Position Summary This position provides professional one‑on‑one and group mentoring to youth in school, community, and after‑school settings. It assists youth in developing strategies to positively connect with school and their community, and communicates directly with parents/guardians, school staff, and other stakeholders to surround the student/mentee with positive options to prevent violence. The mentor works closely with the Site Supervisor and Program Director on MPS VRP requirements, including data management, reporting, personnel relationships, and performance metrics. The school‑based mentor manages a caseload of approximately 20–25 students at the assigned MPS School and remains on‑call and available for youth seven days a week. Essential Functions Complete all training requirements within required timelines using Moodle LMS (MI, TIC, Ethics and Boundaries, Mentoring, Cultural Humility, etc.). Ensure positive youth and parent engagement. Engage youth in educational and positive youth development programming. Facilitate mediations. Build and maintain relationships with school personnel (administration, school safety, social workers, guidance counselors, teachers, etc.) and community partners. Report all program concerns, including personnel matters, to the Co‑Program Director. Coordinate summer activities for VRP participants with the Site Supervisor‑Program Directors. Provide general recreation support throughout the school year following the MPS school calendar and required schedule. Engage professionally in all agency, school, and community meetings. Attend agency events and functions, including Town Halls. Ensure compliance with the agency (AWARDS) and MPS data systems. Provide safe, reliable transportation for youth in accordance with Wisconsin traffic laws and WCS policies and procedures. Engage in regular team meetings with the Supervisor and Co‑Program Director. Ensure all data is timely, entered accurately for tracking and reporting on program goals, benchmarks, and annual MPS Performance Metrics to secure renewal of the contract. Uphold a positive and supportive culture for youth served and for program staff and leaders. Maintain confidentiality for youth served in all written and verbal communications. Review, sign, and adhere to WCS Policies and Procedures in Power DMS. Other duties as assigned by the Site Supervisor and Co‑Directors of MPS VRP. Job Qualifications Knowledge, Skills and Abilities The candidate must have exceptional customer service and person‑centered skills, exemplary verbal and written communication skills, and strong computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, and database applications). They must be detail‑oriented, analytical, problem‑solving, capable of multitasking and organizing, and sensitive to cultural, ethnic, and disability issues. Minimal Qualifications HS Diploma/Equivalent. Two years minimum of experience with justice‑involved youth, reporting, quality assurance, and strong customer service. Strong problem‑solving skills. Commitment to ongoing growth and personal development. Strong computer and typing skills, and proficiency with Microsoft programs and databases. Advanced organization skills. Demonstrated cultural competence when interacting with people of diverse backgrounds. Valid driver’s license, automobile, and insurance meeting agency requirements. Meet all employee requirements (references, criminal and caregiver background check, drug test, driver’s record check). Other Job Information Work Relationship and Scope Reports directly to the Site Supervisor of their assigned MPS School. Interacts with youth and parents served by the program, MPS leadership, VRP team members, and other WCS leadership and staff to carry out the duties outlined in the job description. Working Conditions Work is performed at the assigned school, in the community, and in the residence of the youth when required. The candidate must be comfortable interacting with youth and their families, MPS leadership and staff, WCS leaders and staff, and administrative departments. Hours and availability expectations are those specified by MPS and WCS. Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities. Physical Demands May require sitting at a desk and/or computer for two or more hours at a time. Requires significant computer work.
