Job Summary and QualificationsThe Registered Nurse in the Emergency Department delivers professional nursing care and collaborates with other disciplines to coordinate patient care planning.
Patient Population Served:
The Emergency Department Registered Nurse will exhibit the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care tailored to the physical, intellectual, psychosocial, educational, and safety needs of patients across all age groups, including neonates, children, adolescents, adults, and seniors.
Key Responsibilities:
The following essential functions must be performed by the Emergency Department Registered Nurse, with or without reasonable accommodations. The RN adheres to the Nursing Process, which includes assessment, priority setting, planning, implementation, and evaluation for all ED patients.
- Deliver direct patient care, assess outcomes, consult with specialists as needed, and modify nursing care processes to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
- Conduct comprehensive head-to-toe assessments and reassessments on all patients in accordance with established standards.
- Monitor patients' hemodynamic status and accurately interpret results.
- Demonstrate proficiency in cardiac monitoring, identify dysrhythmias, and provide appropriate interventions.
- Accurately categorize triage levels.
- Maintain thorough nursing documentation, including patient histories, conditions, treatments, responses, and any changes in assessment.
- Respect and uphold the dignity of patients and their families, addressing psychosocial, cultural, ethnic, and spiritual needs.
- Understand growth and development principles to provide age-appropriate care and interpret data to meet each patient's specific needs.
- Engage professionally with patients and families, involving them in care planning.
- Develop teaching plans based on identified learning needs and assess the effectiveness of education, including family involvement as appropriate.
- Stay informed about medications and their correct administration based on patient age and clinical condition.
- Prepare, administer, monitor, and discontinue intravenous fluids.
- Follow established departmental policies, objectives, performance improvement initiatives, and safety standards.
- Ensure a safe and therapeutic environment for patients and families in line with hospital standards.
- Contribute to cost containment through prudent ordering and conservation of supplies and equipment.
- Collaborate with colleagues to achieve departmental goals and maintain positive employee relations.
- Adapt to changes in workload and adjust assignments to optimize productivity and efficiency.
- Provide resource information to other staff members.
- Assist physicians with procedures in the Emergency Department.
- Dispatch ambulances when necessary.
- Receive prehospital reports via radio or telephone communication.
- Supervise unit coordinators and ED technicians, delegating and monitoring tasks as appropriate.
- Orient new employees to the Emergency Department.
- Support the Director of Emergency Services in developing, implementing, and evaluating performance improvement indicators to enhance patient outcomes and the work environment.
- Engage in professional growth through educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings, and workshops; take responsibility for personal professional practice and ongoing education.
- Perform other related duties as assigned within the scope of the NH Nurse Practice Act.

Qualifications:
To successfully fulfill this role, candidates must be able to perform each essential duty effectively. The following qualifications are representative of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required. Education and Experience:
- Graduate from an accredited nursing program with at least one year of experience as a Registered Nurse in a critical care setting preferred.
- Current New Hampshire State Registered Nurse License or Compact State License.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification within six months of hire.
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification within one year of hire.
- Emergency Nurse Pediatric Core Course (ENPC) certification is recommended.
- Trauma Nurse Course (TNCC) certification is recommended.
- Certification as an Emergency Nurse (CEN) is recommended.
- Membership in the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) is encouraged.
- Familiarity with CDC and CMS principles and standards.
- Completion of hospital orientation.
- Completion of departmental orientation within six months of hire.
- Annual health screening.
- Completion of all mandatory HealthStream courses annually.
- Annual training in high-risk crisis intervention.
