Director of Media and Public Relations Agency: Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Location: MAIN MUSEUM Salary: $90,000 About Virginia Museum of Fine Arts The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond is one of the largest comprehensive art museums in the United States. Responsibilities The Director of Media and Public Relations will develop and execute media strategy in partnership with the Chief Communications Officer/Deputy Director. The role includes creating an annual PR plan, coordinating local, regional, national, and international media outreach, writing press releases and other public announcements, and managing the production of media content such as blog posts, media pitches, and event coverage. Key duties include: planning targeted communications, maintaining media contact lists, preparing talking points and presentations for senior leadership, providing media training to staff, analyzing communication effectiveness, and responding to media inquiries. The Director will also oversee internal communications related to museum initiatives. Minimum Qualifications Considerable knowledge of public relations, publicity, electronic and print media, and advertising, including local, state, and national media contacts. High proficiency with technology and media management applications, project management tools, website CMS, and social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, X, and YouTube. Strong oral and written communication skills with the ability to develop and evaluate media relations programs, create promotional concepts, produce audio and video materials, and maintain effective working relationships with diverse media representatives. Demonstrated ability to negotiate media partnerships that yield measurable coverage and/or financial benefits. Additional Considerations Experience in non‑profit public relations or journalism, preferably in the arts. Proven skill in content development and verbal communication. Background in journalism or communications practices, including reporting, editing, and storytelling.
