The role ensures all mechanical cooling systems operate safely, reliably, and in compliance with design intent and manufacturer requirements. The technician works closely with project managers, controls teams, TAB contractors, and clients to deliver fully validated cooling infrastructure. Responsibilities Perform journey‑level HVAC work in startup and repair of chillers, heat pumps, air handlers, cooling towers, hydronic systems, VFD, VRF systems, and control systems. Lead a team, assign work to semi‑skilled workers, inspect their work, and assist other skilled HVAC mechanics; work in varying weather, conditions, and heights. Perform factory‑authorized startup of air‑cooled and water‑cooled HVAC equipment. Verify installation meets manufacturer specifications and project drawings. Inspect piping, electrical, controls, and airflow prior to energization. Assist contractors with punch‑list items related to mechanical systems. Document pre‑functional checklists (PFCs). Execute Level 3–5 commissioning for mission‑critical cooling systems. Perform functional performance testing (FPT) on CRAH/CRAC units, air‑cooled chillers, cooling towers, pumps and hydronic systems, economizers and control sequences. Validate redundancy strategies (N, N+1, N+2) and verify sequences of operation with BAS/EPMS teams. Support Integrated Systems Testing (IST). Complete detailed startup reports and commissioning logs. Maintain deficiency and issues tracking lists. Produce client‑ready turnover packages and provide redline markups for as‑built documentation. Support MOPs, SOPs, and EOP development. Train semi‑skilled workers in procedures, tools, and part recognition. Repair controls, control circuits, evaporators, condensers, air handlers, chillers, pumps, circulation pumps, supply lines, air compressors, steam/other regulating valves and sensors, and ERVs. Supervise, participate, and inventory parts, supplies, and tools on service trucks. Clean cooling towers, replace filters, lubricate equipment, inspect and replace parts and components. Operate computerized scheduling and troubleshoot heating and cooling control systems. Operate a variety of hand and power tools. Strictly adhere to OSHA safety standards, attendance policies, and attendance at training sessions on new technology. Serve as on‑site technical representative during commissioning, participate in project meetings and readiness reviews, and coordinate test sequencing with stakeholders. Provide technical guidance to contractors and clients, support warranty validation, and owner training. Qualifications Graduation from high school or equivalent. 4‑7+ years commercial/light‑commercial HVAC experience supplemented by coursework in a related trade, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Possession of a valid driver’s license. Travel, including overnight stays during project assignments, is required. Ability to pass pre‑employment screening and hold a valid CFC certification. OSHA 30 Knowledge. Work without direct supervision. Deal diplomatically and effectively with customers. Work within standards of accuracy and make decisions based on measurable criteria; comprehend technical data. Be physically capable of working with hands, lifting and carrying objects, seeing well, climbing and maintaining balance on ladders and scaffolds, and standing, stooping, kneeling, or crouching. Have knowledge of current BOCA Code and OSHA safety regulations. Have the ability to coordinate and perform multiple activities in a timely manner. Have the ability to maintain a sense of urgency while remaining calm during emergencies. Thorough knowledge of the principles and techniques of the HVAC trade, methods, tools, parts, and equipment. Thorough knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions in the work area. Thorough knowledge of diagnostic troubleshooting of HVAC equipment and direct digital controls. Ability to understand and accurately follow oral and written instructions and read and interpret service manuals and schematic drawings. Ability to maintain accurate routine records. Ability to exercise the physical strength and agility necessary for job tasks; minimum 50 lbs lifting and carrying capacity and occasional 75 lb lifting. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co‑workers, sales engineers, and customers. Ability to work overtime at short notice, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
