Job Title: Licensed Vocational Nurse
Status: Non-Exempt
Reports To: Principal or Designee Terms: 180 Days
Department: Assigned Campus Pay Grade: IS3
Primary Function
Implement school health programs by providing direct health related services, health education and preventive health practices to meet the needs of students and staff, under the clinical supervision of the Coordinator of Health and Nursing Services and/or supervising Registered Nurse (RN). Provide clinical oversight/supervision of the clinic aide when applicable.
Qualifications
Education/Certification:
Graduate of an accredited professional nursing education program Current Texas or Compact Vocational/Practical Nurse License with State Board of Nurse Examiners required Current automatic external defibrillator (AED) and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certificates
Special Knowledge/Skills
Knowledge of health appraisal to identify student health defects Ability to implement policies and procedures Knowledge of basic first aid Proficient keyboarding and file maintenance skills Ability to write routine reports and correspondence Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills Ability to comply with federal guidelines (FERPA) regarding confidentiality of a student's health/education record Such additions and alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Trustees may find appropriate and acceptable

Essential Job Functions
1. Provide basic first aid and care for minor injuries and illness according to a detailed protocol established by the school health program.
2. Administer medication to students according to board policy and district procedures.
3. Administer first aid to ill or injured students and school personnel.
4. Assist with mandatory screening activities.
5. Cross-train in the procedures of special needs students as needed.
6. Contact EMS according to established school health services protocols or as directed by school RN.
7. Contribute to and implement the Individual Healthcare Plans (IHP) as established by the school RN.
8. Communicate with parents regarding individual students as directed by the school RN.
9. Maintain accurate student health records, including immunizations, medication administration and treatment information.
10. Send routine notices to parents as requested by the school nurse.
11. Provide relevant counseling and guidance to students and parents related to health and wellness.
12. Appropriately document health office activities, including incident reports, communicable disease activities and referrals 13. Maintain clinic supply inventory and request supplies as needed.
14. Assist with the maintenance of equipment.
15. Support campus hearing, vision and spinal screening of students as mandated by state law making appropriate referrals and follow-up.
16. Adhere to professional and ethical standards, in accordance with generally accepted community standards and the Texas Education Agency Code of Ethics.
17. Develop needed professional skills appropriate to job performance.
18. Maintain confidentiality.
19. Reliable attendance and punctuality.
20. Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
21. Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
22. Attend and participate in staff meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
23. Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and local board policy.
24. Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor and the Superintendent of Schools.

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard medical clinic equipment including automated external defibrillator (AED); special needs adaptive equipment; standard office equipment including computer and peripherals
Motion: Frequent walking, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension
Posture: Frequent standing, sitting, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing pulling, and twisting
Lifting: Frequent light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); may require regular heavy lifting (45 pounds or more) and position of students with physical disabilities; controlling behavior through physical restraint, assisting non ambulatory students
Environment: Exposure to biological hazards, bacteria, and communicable diseases
Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress.
