Policy Analyst

$80k - $90k
Full-time

Groundwork Collaborative

Reports to: SVP of Policy and Advocacy Status: Full time; non-exempt Location: Washington D.C. This is a hybrid workplace, with Mondays and Wednesdays in the office and three days remote, as well as the occasional need to work in person for events and special projects Salary: $80,000-$90,000 About Groundwork: Launched in 2018, the Groundwork Collaborative is driven by the idea that We Are The Economy: when all of us are doing well, that is when our economy thrives. We fight for progressive economic policy and narrative change that builds accountable public power, breaks up concentrations of private power, and affirmatively centers people too long left out of prosperity. We understand that taken together, these actions will lead to a stronger and more resilient economy. Groundwork’s unique structure – part strategic communications, part think tank, and part issue advocacy organization – allows us to drive narrative and policy change with credibility, expertise, and impact. We work across four core audiences – the media, policymakers, economic experts, and grasstops leaders – and use targeted policy campaigns and timely research and messaging to advance a truly inclusive economic worldview. We’re savvy, strategic thinkers who know how to spot an opportunity to advance our worldview and influence national economic policy debates, identify new audiences for Groundwork’s resources, and support and amplify the great work our partners are already doing so we’re all better aligned to achieve our common goals. We’re fearless in our approach to narrative change and are focused more on how to make the right economic messages popular tomorrow than we are on the poll-tested messages of today. Position Summary The Policy Analyst will be a member of Groundwork’s Policy, Advocacy, and Research team and will engage in substantive research and analytical work to advance a coherent economic worldview within the broader progressive movement. Groundwork partners with groups across the movement to weave a through line among efforts and policy ideas that too often seem disparate. The Policy Analyst will work closely with other members Groundwork’s Policy and Advocacy team and external partners to produce everything from internal analyses to products for public release. As a Policy Analyst you’ll… Gather and analyze academic and policy research, statistical data; and federal, state, and local policy or implementation information. Draft policy products, with a focus on summarizing research and policy information so it is understandable to a broad audience. Develop written and graphical presentations of research for internal and external dissemination. Keep up to date on relevant news, literature, and legislative processes related to economic policy. Support logistics, operations, and events for the Policy, Advocacy, and Research team. Work collaboratively with colleagues and accept oversight and feedback graciously. Attend meetings and convenings aligned with Groundwork’s worldview to form and deepen connections with a diverse community of organizations, experts, and advocates. Perform other duties as assigned. About you: You have a bachelor’s degree or higher or equivalent lived experience in Economics, Political Science, Sociology, or a related field. You have experience in the progressive economic policymaking or data analysis community, such as for an economic policy research organization/think tank, legislative body or executive agency, or academic institution. You have excellent qualitative and quantitative research skills, including the ability to gather, analyze, and describe data with a variety of tools. You’re comfortable distilling jargon or technical language into clear, concise, and compelling language for a variety of audiences. You’re an excellent writer, with an eye toward overall quality control. You have excellent, compelling, conversational speaking skills. You’re a problem solver who suggests solutions when you see challenges. You have a creative and entrepreneurial attitude. You can set priorities and work on multiple detail-oriented tasks, often on a time-sensitive basis. You are self-motivated, well-organized, flexible, and work effectively both individually and as part of a team. You are committed to economic, racial and social justice. In addition, it would be a bonus if you have… Social media and rapid response experience. Some experience with one or more of the following: Corporate or political research, such as analyzing corporate earnings calls, Securities and Exchange Commissions filing, or Federal Election Commission reports. State and/or federal legislative and/or regulatory processes. Quantitative economic research, such as for an economic policy research organization/think tank, scorekeeping agency (e.g., the Congressional Budget Office or Office of Management and Budget), federal statistical or economic agency (e.g., Census Bureau, Bureau of Labor Statistics, Federal Reserve System, Consumer Financial Protection Bureau), or academic institution. Large economic datasets (such as public-use Census microdata) and regular releases (such as the monthly Employment Situation Summary or quarterly Gross Domestic Product estimate). Advanced statistical packages (e.g., R, Stata, Python) and/or data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, ggplot2). The salary range for this position is $80,000 to $90,000, commensurate with experience.
