Job Summary Location: Baylor, Scott & White All Saints Medical Center, Ft Worth Specialty/Unit: Certified Surgical Technologist, Labor & Delivery Shift/Schedule: Full–time nights, 3 twelve‑hour shifts per week, rotating weekends The Surgical Technologist 2 works during surgery to speed up procedures, under a Registered Nurse's supervision. This position helps the surgical team by using equipment and tools to ensure a safe operating room and that all equipment is available and working properly. Essential Functions Discuss special needs with the surgeon before surgery and scrub into the procedure early to prepare instruments. Prepare the operative site by aseptically cleaning and clipping the patient, as needed. Prepare and maintain the instrument table in an organized manner to avoid damage and inaccuracies in instrument counts. Identify damaged or incomplete trays; rectify discrepancies immediately or contact the appropriate personnel to avoid delays or injury. Set up the operating room based on surgical procedure schedules and arrange sterile supplies and equipment for the specific procedure. Ensure the proper functioning of surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies throughout the procedure. Perform surgical counts of sponges, sharps, instruments, and miscellaneous items according to established policies and procedures. Anticipate the needs of the surgeon and surgical team; pass sterile supplies and equipment, hold retractor devices, and respond to team requests during surgery. Assist the surgical team with draping and positioning the patient. Receive surgical specimens following protocol and pass them off the sterile field to the circulating nurse, verifying the source. Assist with placement of surgical dressings at the operative site after case completion. Disassemble surgical instruments at the end of the procedure, recycle as needed, and dispose of sharps, fluids, and waste properly. Prepare soiled instrumentation for transport to the decontamination area. Ensure cleaning, decontamination, sterilization, maintenance, and preparation of instruments, equipment, and supplies for distribution. Clean the operating room after each case and return equipment to appropriate storage areas. Follow infection control policies, AORN Guidelines, OSHA guidelines, and other regulations to maintain a safe work environment for all. Ensure proper orientation and knowledge of all equipment and instrumentation prior to patient use. Maintain inventory of clean and sterilized equipment, instruments, and supplies; follow established policies, procedures, and regulatory standards; collaborate to control inventory; order supplies, document equipment use, and maintain records. Key Success Factors Knowledge of infection prevention and regulatory sterilization standards. Knowledge of the theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique. Knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and the tools and technologies used to support surgeons during invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures. Good verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with surgical and central sterile processing team members. Occasional exposure to chemical and radiation hazards. Successful completion of: A Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) accredited or other nationally accredited surgical technologist program, and current certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or the National Center for Proficiency Testing (NCCT). A formal surgical technology training program in the U.S. military or Public Health Service Commissioner. Employment to practice surgical technology in a health care facility prior to September 1, 2009. Qualifications Education: Graduate of an accredited surgical technology program. Experience: Less than one year of experience. Certification/License/Registration: Basic Life Support (BLS) or BLS within 30 days of hire or transfer. Certified Surgical Technologist (CST): If the candidate completed military/Public Health Service ST training or worked as an ST before 9/1/2009, an HS/GED is sufficient.
