Police Officer

Job Description Responsible for the enforcement of institute, state and federal laws and regulations in the protection of life and property in service to the institution's community. Responsibilities Preserves the peace through the use and execution of all lawful means, interceding when authorized by law, to prevent or suppress crime. Patrols buildings and grounds checking locked doors and windows and investigates suspicious activity or individuals. Performs law enforcement functions in the areas of patrol, security, investigations, gang activity prevention, and surveillance. Utilizes proper means to ensure the safety and security of people, property and equipment throughout the institution's community. Enforces traffic law by detecting violations, making violator contacts, placing violators in custody or issuing citations/warnings. Investigates motor vehicle collisions. Provides service, information, and directions to students, employees and visitors. Performs all other duties as assigned. Qualifications Must have the physical and mental capabilities to properly carry out responsibilities and duties as a commissioned police officer for the Institution. Ability to pass a physical agility test. Education High school diploma or GED and successful completion of a TCOLE approved Basic Peace Officer Course and TCOLE exam is required. At least sixty (60) college hours from an accredited college or university is preferred. Experience Successful completion of a formal field-training program is preferred, no experience required. License And Certification Must hold a Peace Officer Commission, issued by the Institute and a valid driver's license not subject to suspension. Must be eligible to drive institution-owned/leased motor vehicle. Must meet certain prerequisites established by the Office of the Director of Police, the Board of Regents, and the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE).
