Tool and Die Maker

Compensation: $30 to $34 per hour , plus company benefits, plus the bonus program

Work hours are 6:00am to 4:30pm Monday thru Thursday. Overtime available on Fridays

Position overview

Performance Stamping makes precision metal stampings in Carpentersville, Illinois for automotive, appliance, and power generation customers who count on parts that are right the first time. The Tool and Die Maker keeps our stamping dies and tooling running: repairing, maintaining, and improving the dies that make every part we ship, so presses run and parts stay in spec.

This role reports to the Tool Room Supervisor and works closely with Production, Quality, and Engineering.

What you will do

·         Keep dies running: Repair, modify, and maintain stamping dies, including progressive, transfer, draw, piercing, and forming dies, using conventional machine tools.

·         Support the press floor: Help production set and pull dies, and respond quickly when a die problem stops a press.

·         Build what the floor needs: Build or modify fixtures, gauges, and assembly assist tools.

·         Verify the work: Check repairs with measuring equipment so the die makes good parts on the first hit after it goes back in.

·         Keep the die history: Record the work performed on every tool so the next repair starts with the facts.

·         Work safe and clean: Follow safety, quality, and 5S practices in the tool room and on the floor.

Required qualifications

·         A one-year certificate from a college or technical school, or one year of tool room experience; or an equivalent combination.

·         Working knowledge of metal types and of progressive, transfer, draw, piercing, and forming dies.

·         Skilled with conventional machine tools and precision measuring equipment.

Preferred qualifications

·         Tool and die journeyman card or apprenticeship.

·         Experience on presses up to 600 tons and with die tryout.

What the job takes

·         Reading and writing: Read and follow safety rules, prints, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; write clear repair notes; talk easily with the tool room, production, and management.

·         Math: Work comfortably with whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and all units of measure.

·         Problem solving: Follow detailed written or verbal instructions and work through problems with a few concrete variables.

·         Physical: Regularly stand, walk, sit, use your hands, reach, and talk and listen; lift up to 40 pounds, and occasionally move items up to 100 pounds with equipment. The job needs close, distance, color, and peripheral vision and depth perception.

·         Work environment: Plant floor, around presses and moving equipment. Noise ranges from quiet to very loud; hearing protection is required on the production floor.

Dies come back from the tool room right the first time, press downtime for die problems keeps falling, and every repair is recorded so the history is there for the next one.
