Utilities Maintenance Mechanic I/II/III (temporary)

Under specified supervision, performs scheduled maintenance and mechanical repair of sewer lift stations, raw and potable water treatment facilities equipment and machinery. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and normally filled by advancement from level I or, when filled from the outside, require previous directly related experience. Utilities Maintenance Mechanic I Under immediate supervision, this is the entry‑level position. Incumbents are not required to have directly related work experience. Work is observed and reviewed both during performance and upon completion. Utilities Maintenance Mechanic II Under general supervision, an intermediate‑level position. Incumbents generally have related work experience. They perform routine and less complex duties and steadily receive more complex duties as experience is gained. Utilities Maintenance Mechanic III Under general supervision, a journeyman‑level position. Performs complex repairs and the full array of duties. Minimal instruction or assistance required; capable of providing training to lower level. Essential Functions Maintain a 24‑hour on‑call status for emergency situations as scheduled. Perform scheduled preventative maintenance, mechanical repair and installation of machinery and equipment; adjust, lubricate, align, diagnose and replace equipment as required; develop daily and routine maintenance schedules. Maintain service records, parts inventory and specifications for machinery and equipment for implementation of the preventative maintenance program. Follow, prepare and generate standard operating procedures. Assess and track equipment condition for asset management; obtain quotes for equipment procurement, replacement and budgetary planning. Monitor and maintain water supply system, storage tank levels and pump station flow and pressure; pre‑treat water source lakes with appropriate chemicals, using a boat. Monitor and maintain wastewater lift stations; perform maintenance on machinery, including lift station pumps, submersible pumps, electric and gas driven motors, control generators, compressors, and gear drives. Monitor and maintain water treatment plants; perform scheduled and unscheduled maintenance on machinery, including pumps, valves, valve actuators, motors, pipes, flow meters, compressors, blowers, and other related equipment. Cleans facilities including pressure reducing valve vaults, pump stations, sewage lift stations, tank sites, water plants; coordinates contract mowing and performs mowing at facilities as required. Monitor and maintain chemical feed and aeration facilities; read charts, gauges, and meters to determine status of the water supply and distribution system; assists with chemical deliveries at the water plant. Perform work requiring specified respiratory equipment to guard against airborne hazards; comply with all Municipal, State, and Federal physical requirements per Self‑Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) guidelines. May serve on‑call status on a rotating basis for snow removal. May work a varying schedule and/or shift. May be required to work overtime. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications Utilities Maintenance Mechanic I High School diploma or GED. Valid Colorado Class B Commercial Driver's License or ability to obtain within 9 months of hire, with a safe driving record. Utilities Maintenance Mechanic II High school diploma or GED; two years of experience in mechanical maintenance and repair work (equivalent combinations may be considered). Valid Colorado Class B Commercial Driver’s License with a safe driving record or ability to obtain within 9 months of hire; both a Class I Water Distribution Certification and Class I Sewer Collection Certification, or only a Water Plant Operator D Certification. Utilities Maintenance Mechanic III High school diploma or GED; three years of experience in mechanical maintenance and repair work, preferably in water plant and facility operations (equivalent combinations may be considered). Valid Colorado Class B Commercial Driver’s License with a safe driving record or ability to obtain within 9 months of hire; both a Class II Water Distribution Certification and a Class II Sewer Collection Certification, or only a Water Plant Operator C Certification. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Utilities Maintenance Mechanic I Knowledge of the policies, procedures and goals of the city of Thornton and its department. Knowledge of the organization, purpose, current issues, projects, and employee responsibilities of the department. Knowledge of safety procedures and regulations for confined space, utility maintenance functions, and chemical safety. Skill in operating all assigned equipment, machinery, tools or equipment safely and appropriately. Skill in safe and lawful operation of a motor vehicle. Ability to successfully complete all medical and fit testing for respiratory equipment. Ability to wear SCBA gear and/or respiratory protection. Ability to read, comprehend and consistently follow safe work procedures. Ability to listen well and communicate effectively orally and in writing with various audiences. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with city employees and the general public. Ability to use standard office equipment, personal computer and job‑related computer applications including e‑mail. Utilities Maintenance Mechanic II All previous requirements. Knowledge of general processing procedures associated with water supply distribution. Knowledge of federal, state, county and city regulations applicable to treatment plant operations. Skill in the maintenance, repair and adjustment of motors, engines, pumps, and other associated water plant equipment. Skill in operating equipment and machinery relating to plant mechanics, including boom truck, forklifts, lathes, drilling equipment, power equipment and hand tools. Skill in diagnosing and detecting malfunctions and taking corrective action. Ability to wear SCBA gear and/or respiratory protection. Utilities Maintenance Mechanic III All previous requirements. Skill in performing complex installation, maintenance, and replacement of machinery, including lift station pumps, submersible pumps, electric and gas driven motors, control generators, compressors, gear drives, valves, actuators, PRVs. Skill in metal fabrication, welding, grinding, and cutting. Skill in training junior and new employees regarding the duties of the position. Ability to regularly exercise discretion and independent judgment. Ability to maintain accurate records. Physical and Mental Requirements While performing the essential duties, the employee must climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, and perform repetitive motions. The position is mostly medium work; exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. The employee is required to have close visual acuity for mechanical or skilled trades tasks and must comply with all physical requirements of SCBA and/or other respiratory protection equipment, including passing all medical and fit testing.
