Job Description

Position Title: Bus Driver Reports To: Director of Transportation

Work Days: 180 Pay Frequency: Monthly

Salary Schedule: Local Salary Schedule Job Code: 461

FLSA: Non-exempt Location: Transportation

Primary Function: Daily transportation of school children following all state, local, and federal guidelines.

Required Qualifications

Minimum Education

Preferred High School Diploma or GED; Ability to complete the school bus driver training program as prescribed by Federal, State, and Local polices Must be 21 years of age

Minimum Experience

None

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

• Must have a satisfactory driving record
• Must be over the age of 21
• Must be able to pass a DOT drug screening and physical examination
• Must be able to pass a background check successfully
• Authorized to work in the U.S.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a Class B CDL with Passenger and School Bus endorsements
• Ability to read and interpret street signs, route sheets, and maps
• Ability to observe all traffic and safety regulations for school buses
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions
• Ability to be flexible, a team player, and willing to step in as needs arise
• Reliable attendance

The Board of Education and the Superintendent May Accept Alternatives to Some of the Above Requirements.

Essential Duties and Tasks

• Perform a thorough Pre-Trip and Post-Trip inspection of the bus and its particular equipment
• Exercise maximum regard for the safety and welfare of all transported students while operating a school bus
• Perform emergency evacuation drills as required by the board of education
• Communicate effectively and professionally with passengers, school staff, and the public
• Complete legible and accurate required reports in the prescribed manner on a timely basis
• Successfully complete driving skills evaluations
• Attend all required in-service training, safety meetings, and any other required meetings
• Report all accidents/incidents, no matter how insignificant the accident/incident may appear
• Follow all safety policies and procedures

Essential Duties and Tasks Continued

• Clean bus as necessary to maintain a professional appearance and positive image
• Maintain a presentable appearance which includes being appropriately dressed, neat grooming, and good hygiene
• Keep dispatch and passengers informed of possible delays or route changes
• Maintain order of passengers; resolve disputes.
• An appreciation for young people and the ability to build a rapport with them
• Operate the two-way communication equipment correctly and according to transportation policy
• Operate adaptive transportation lift to board and discharge challenged passengers using safe and responsible procedures
• Maintain a cooperative attitude with fellow employees, supervisors, and passengers, always promoting goodwill

Perform other duties as required

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

Daily hours will be approximately four hours, generally Monday through Friday. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.

Physical Requirements/Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to sit for extended periods; stand; walk; handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. Routine physical activities required to fulfill job responsibilities; able to lift a minimum of 60 pounds.
