Medical Laboratory Scientist - Hematology

Summary The Pathology Technologist reports to the Pathology Manager and, under general supervision and within established department policies and procedures, performs complex clinical laboratory testing across one or more sections of the Pathology Department. This role requires a professional level of knowledge to accurately read and interpret test results, particularly those that are abnormal or atypical. Key duties include calibrating instruments, performing quality control procedures, and reporting test results. Conduct routine and specialized blood bank testing, including: Blood typing and crossmatching Ensuring donor-recipient compatibility Identifying abnormal incompatibility factors Detecting atypical blood conditions Perform hematology testing, including: Identification and quantification of blood components (platelets, leukocytes, etc.) Coagulation studies Conduct microbiology testing: Isolate and identify microorganisms from clinical specimens Utilize morphological and biochemical methods for pathogen detection Perform antibiotic susceptibility testing Perform clinical chemistry analyses: Evaluate body fluids for glucose, electrolytes, gases, drugs, and alcohol levels Laboratory Operations Prepare and evaluate solutions, reagents, and stains using standard laboratory formulas; modify as needed for specialized testing. Perform quality control checks on equipment and reagents; document and evaluate results. Set up, calibrate, and maintain laboratory instruments; troubleshoot operational issues and perform minor repairs. Monitor equipment performance and perform preventative maintenance. Assist in developing, evaluating, and implementing new laboratory tests and procedures. Specimen Handling & Processing Receive, log, and track specimens throughout testing processes. Collect blood samples from patients following established procedures, when required. Transport specimens safely to the laboratory. Reporting & Communication Record and review test results for accuracy. Prepare and distribute laboratory reports to physicians and authorized personnel. Communicate findings and discuss results with physicians as needed. Training & Support Assist in training students, residents, and new staff members. Support orientation within assigned laboratory sections. General Maintenance Clean and maintain laboratory equipment, instruments, glassware, and workspaces. Minimum Qualifications Education (Basic Knowledge) Bachelor’s degree in a laboratory science (e.g., chemical, physical, biological, clinical laboratory science, medical technology) OR Equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA standards Credentials One of the following: National certification (ASCP or equivalent) in: Medical Laboratory Science / Technology Microbiology Chemistry Hematology Other recognized specialty OR Eligibility for certification with completion of an accredited clinical laboratory training program (ABHES, NAACLS, or HHS-approved) OR Previously qualified as a technologist under CLIA standards Experience Minimum of one (1) year of clinical laboratory experience Skills & Abilities Ability to operate laboratory equipment and perform assigned tests accurately Strong analytical and interpretation skills Physical and visual dexterity to conduct and evaluate tests Ability to stand and work at laboratory benches for extended periods Knowledge of patient care considerations across age groups, developmental stages, and cultural backgrounds Work Environment & Physical Requirements Exposure to infectious materials, odors, toxins, and hazardous substances Visual strain from close examination of specimens Frequent standing, lifting, and carrying of supplies Pay Range: $29.53-$48.72 EEO Statement: Brown University Health is committed to providing equal employment opportunities and maintaining a work environment free from all forms of unlawful discrimination and harassment.
