About the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences The department leads psychiatry education for the Dell Medical School and its post‑graduate programs train mental health professionals to become 21st‑century leaders in psychiatry and psychology. Clinical services provide evidence‑based care for individuals and families in multiple general medical and specialty behavioral health settings with an active presence in community settings. About the Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist Position The Dell Medical School Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences seeks a board‑certified or board‑eligible Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist to join clinical faculty and serve on community and school‑based telemedicine programs and the consultation‑liaison clinical team in Austin, Texas. The candidate will help the department achieve its goal of partnering with community partners to develop clinical, educational, and research initiatives that revolutionize how people access and maintain mental health in Central Texas and beyond. Student loan forgiveness is available for faculty through the Texas Mental Health Professionals Loan Repayment Program. The position will provide clinical and consultative care as part of the Child and Perinatal Psychiatric Access Network (CPAN and PeriPAN), a telephone consultation line for physicians, Texas Child Health Access through Telemedicine (TCHATT), a school‑based telehealth program, and Child Psychiatry Workforce Expansion (CWPE) projects for the Central Texas catchment area. The physician will also provide psychiatric care to children and adolescents as part of the Community Psychiatry Workforce Expansion (CPWE) program, supported by recent legislative funding to increase access to pediatric mental health services across Texas. Essential Functions Treatment and Assessment Leveraging knowledge and understanding of child/adolescent psychiatry, the physician treats and assesses patients and physicians (e.g., primary care physicians, family medicine doctors). The physician obtains information through the clinical interview, interprets age‑specific responses, and applies psychosocial and pharmacologic knowledge to benefit patients. The physician offers education, clinical recommendations, and referral information to equip doctors to manage mental health cases in the primary care setting, treats patients, staff, and doctors with dignity and respect, meets productivity standards as developed by the Medical Director, prescribes medication in collaboration with patients/guardians, applies cost/benefit/risk analysis, and provides ongoing in‑person and/or telemedical medication management services. The physician evaluates medication effectiveness, provides patient education, obtains appropriate consents, and performs AIMS and other assessments as applicable. Evaluation The physician provides and appropriately documents in‑person and/or telemedical evaluations consistent with the standard of care and in accordance with applicable guidelines. Psychiatric diagnosis is supported by clinical findings, the physician orders lab work as indicated, reviews results promptly, and adjusts treatment as necessary. Documentation All services are documented in a professional, timely manner using approved medical record systems. Documents are completed within 24 hours of service delivery, including phone calls, medication changes, and referrals. Rationale for non‑standard treatment (e.g., polypharmacy, substance use, off‑label medications, lab monitoring changes, long‑term benzodiazepines) is clearly documented. Emergency Evaluation Provides child and adolescent psychiatric emergency evaluations and ongoing crisis services. Documents risk factors and recommendations and assists staff in developing appropriate crisis plans. Team Participation The physician participates in treatment team meetings, attends medical staff meetings, peer review, quality management activities, and other activities within the scope of a child and adolescent psychiatrist as assigned by the Medical Director. The physician cultivates teamwork relationships, collaborates with colleagues on new services/programs, works with clinic staff to maximize access, and promotes efficiency and cost‑effectiveness of services. The ideal candidate will demonstrate knowledge of, and compliance with attendance, work schedule, on‑call policies, center policies/procedures, professional/legal requirements, and billing standards. The candidate will maintain required training, licensure, and certificates; demonstrate ethical, courteous, and professional behavior, and communicate with staff and patients promptly.
