- Serves as a key member of the Regional Leadership Team formulating plans, policies, and objectives for the region.
- Addresses major issues such as manpower, budget, priorities of work, land allocation, and internal and external problems and concerns.
- Serves as a representative of the agency completing duties in a way that is trustworthy, caring, respectful, responsive, curious, and inclusive.
- Exercises the full range of managerial responsibilities over the forest and human resource programs on the Forest.
- Determines which programs on the Forest should be initiated, dropped, or curtailed, and when such action should occur.
- Determines organizations on the Forest and delegates authorities.
- Determines most economical means of meeting the Forest's objectives within fiscal and legal constraints and takes action to ensure these means are followed.
- Performs supervisory duties 25% or more of the time.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
- Males born after 12/31/1959 must be Selective Service registered or exempt.
- Subject to satisfactory adjudication of background investigation and/or fingerprint check.
- Per Public Law 104-134 all Federal employees are required to have federal payments made by direct deposit to their financial institution.

- Subject to one-year supervisory probationary period (unless prior service is creditable). New USDA supervisors must successfully complete all components of the required new supervisory training program before the end of their probationary period.
- Selectee is subject to financial disclosure requirements and must submit form OGE-450, Confidential Financial Disclosure Report, within 30 days of appointment and annually thereafter.
- Provided counsel to higher organizational levels concerning program issues and their current and anticipated effects;
- Exercised direct program responsibilities that included program development, planning, budgeting, and identifying workforce and organizational needs to establish and meet priorities;
- Developed and sustained relationships with one or more of the following: external partners, members of the public, representatives of agencies or tribal governments to anticipate and resolve conflicts and issues.
