Position Overview

News 6 is seeking an engaging visual storyteller to join our news team as a Photojournalist. The Photographer will be responsible for shooting, producing, and editing compelling news content under tight deadlines for broadcast and digital platforms.

This position requires a proactive, motivated professional who can work independently in the field while collaborating closely with reporters, producers, and other members of the news team. The ideal candidate has a strong eye for visual storytelling, sound editorial judgment, and a dedication to producing accurate, impactful stories that resonate with our audience.

The successful candidate will be comfortable working in fast-paced environments, adapting to changing assignments, troubleshooting technical challenges, and finding innovative ways to tell stories across broadcast, web, OTT, and social media platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Operate professional cameras, audio equipment, lighting, and editing systems to produce high-quality video and audio for news broadcasts and digital platforms.
  • Capture compelling visuals and natural sound that effectively communicate the importance and emotion of a story.
  • Engage with the community to develop and capture news stories, demonstrating sensitivity to the people and communities affected by the news.
  • Serve as a field producer and photographer on location, collaborating with reporters and the news team to plan and execute coverage.
  • Utilize creative editing, graphics, sound, and visual techniques to enhance storytelling while maintaining a modern, clean, and distraction-free presentation.
  • Edit news packages, VO/SOTs, digital stories, and other content under tight deadlines using non-linear editing systems.
  • Identify opportunities for original digital video content, including vertical video for social media, OTT platforms, and station websites.
  • Manage a complex shooting and editing schedule while consistently meeting or exceeding deadlines.
  • Maintain brand consistency through appropriate graphics, clean visuals, lower thirds, and on-screen text that align with established storytelling and visual standards.
  • Operate and maintain Steadicam systems and other specialized camera equipment as needed.
  • Utilize DaVinci Resolve and other professional post-production tools for editing, color correction, finishing, and content delivery.
  • Operate ENG equipment, including microwave and fiber transmission systems, to support live and recorded news coverage.
  • Safely operate microwave transmission equipment when assigned.
  • Utilize a Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate to gather aerial news footage safely and in accordance with applicable regulations.
  • Act as a problem solver in the field, quickly resolving technical and logistical issues under pressure.
  • Transfer and deliver media efficiently using appropriate computer, network, cloud, and FTP/file-transfer workflows.
  • Stay current with emerging technologies, digital storytelling techniques, and new approaches to news gathering.
  • Configure and maintain routers, servers, encoders, decoders, transmitters, receivers, cameras, switchers, audio consoles, intercom systems, and related equipment.
  • Assist with the design, installation, integration, and commissioning of new broadcast systems.
  • Maintain accurate technical documentation, equipment inventories, system diagrams, and maintenance records.
  • Install, configure, maintain, and repair broadcast equipment and systems.
  • Monitor broadcast operations and troubleshoot technical issues involving audio, video, RF, transmission, networking, and automation systems.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Key Qualifications

  • Associate or bachelor's degree in Broadcast Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Information Technology, or a related field; equivalent technical experience may be considered.
  • Minimum 2 years of professional news photography experience, demonstrating strong non-linear editing, lighting, camera operation, and production skills.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with professional broadcast cameras, audio equipment, and field production systems.
  • Knowledge of digital video formats, SDI, IP video, audio-over-IP, and broadcast transmission technologies.
  • Ability to read technical documentation, schematics, and system diagrams.
  • Experience operating Steadicam or comparable stabilized camera systems.
  • Working knowledge of DaVinci Resolve, including editing and post-production workflows.
  • Proficiency with ENG operations, including the ability to operate microwave transmission equipment and, preferably, microwave trucks.
  • Experience with fiber transmission and live video contribution workflows.
  • A valid FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate and practical experience capturing news footage with drones is strongly preferred.
  • Strong understanding of computer/IT workflows, media management, networking, and File Transfer Protocols (FTP).
  • Demonstrated ability to tell compelling stories visually, with a preference for NPPA-style reporting.
  • Strong news judgment and digital media savvy.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize assignments, and make decisive editorial and technical judgments in the field.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds of equipment and shoulder an ENG camera for extended periods.
  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, particularly in high-pressure, deadline-driven environments.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, holidays, early mornings, and extended shifts as news coverage requires.
  • Ability to be on-call for breaking news and travel for assignments.
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record.
  • Collaborative attitude and excellent communication skills when working with management, reporters, producers, photographers, technical staff, and community members.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Broadcast Journalism, Journalism, Communications, Television Production, or a related field.
  • Advanced proficiency with Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe Creative Cloud products.
  • Experience with DaVinci Resolve for advanced editing, color correction, and finishing.
  • Experience producing content for broadcast, web, OTT, and social media platforms.
  • Strong knowledge of vertical video and mobile-first storytelling.
  • Creative interest in emerging production technologies, AI-assisted workflows, drones, stabilization systems, and innovative visual storytelling tools.
  • Previous recognition, awards, or other demonstrated achievements in news gathering, visual storytelling, or news production.
  • Experience working in a live newsroom environment with multiple simultaneous deadlines.
  • Experience with SMPTE standards and IP-based broadcast technologies.
  • Knowledge of SMPTE ST 2110, NDI, AES67, Dante, or similar technologies.
  • Experience with broadcast RF and transmission systems.
  • Familiarity with fiber-optic, Ethernet, and network infrastructure.
  • Experience with broadcast automation and media asset management systems.
