Job Title: Archery Instructor/ Open Shoot Attendant

FLSA Status: Non-exempt Job Grade: Part-Time

Reports to: Program Director Revision Date: 08/31/2026

Leadership Level: Staff Primary Function/Department: Youth & Family

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Archery Instructor at YMCA of the Greater Tri-Valley serves others by intentionally welcoming, connecting, and supporting them and inviting them to get involved and give back to the community.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Teach fundamental archery skills, including range safety, equipment handling, shooting technique, aiming, and proper form.
  • Plan and lead age-appropriate archery lessons, activities, games, and skill-building exercises.
  • Maintain a safe, organized, and welcoming archery range in accordance with YMCA policies and established safety standards.
  • Inspect and properly maintain bows, arrows, targets, and other archery equipment.
  • Establish and consistently reinforce range rules and safe equipment practices.
  • Adapt instruction to accommodate different ages, abilities, learning styles, and experience levels.
  • Encourage participants to set personal goals and recognize progress rather than focusing solely on competition or scores.
  • Incorporate character-building lessons into archery activities, emphasizing:
    • Focus: Learning to concentrate and stay present.
    • Discipline: Practicing consistently and following safety procedures.
    • Patience: Understanding that improvement takes time and practice.
    • Responsibility: Caring for equipment and taking ownership of personal actions.
    • Perseverance: Learning from mistakes and continuing to work toward goals.
    • Respect: Demonstrating respect for instructors, teammates, competitors, equipment, and the range.
    • Honesty: Keeping accurate scores and demonstrating integrity, whether winning or losing.
    • Confidence: Building self-esteem through skill development and personal achievement.
  • Foster teamwork and positive relationships among participants while maintaining appropriate individual challenges.
  • Serve as a positive role model and mentor for youth participants.
  • Provide constructive feedback and encouragement that helps participants develop both archery skills and life skills.
  • Recognize and celebrate individual growth, effort, sportsmanship, and character development.
  • Communicate effectively with parents, guardians, YMCA staff, and program leadership regarding participant progress and concerns.
  • Follow all YMCA policies, emergency procedures, child protection guidelines, and applicable safety requirements.
  • Attend required staff meetings, trainings, and professional-development opportunities.
  • Assist with demonstrations, special events, competitions, camps, and other YMCA programs as needed.
  • Adheres to policies related to boundaries with youth.
  • Attends required abuse risk management training.
  • Adheres to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising youth.
  • Reports suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations. 
  • Follows mandated abuse reporting requirements.
Requirements:

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience with Archery preferred
  • Complete USA Archery Level 1 certification before teaching class 
  • Ability to and at least one year of experience developing positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds.
  • Commitment to inclusion and compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Ability to respond to emergency situations and act accordingly.
  • Must meet all Association-Wide training requirements in addition to those set forth by their supervisor.
  • Must be able to pass a Nationwide Criminal and Sex Offender Registry Background Screening.
  • Must ensure that the physical and social environments for program delivery reflect the Y’s definition of character and values
