Supervisor of Operations II

Overview Interstate Waste Services provides solid waste and recycling services in Northern New Jersey, Southern New York State, New York City, Connecticut, and Ohio. Essential Job Summary Operations Supervisor II supervises collection operations for one or more lines of business (commercial, residential, roll‑off, and container pickup). The supervisor manages drivers and helpers, collaborates with the Operations Hauling Manager on tactical initiatives, and ensures adherence to all safety, environmental, regulatory, accounting, and ethical standards. Essential Job Functions To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other duties may be assigned. Route Planning and Safety Awareness Check in drivers and helpers ensuring they are fit for duty, in uniform, and have proper PPE. Lead and communicate safety goals and objectives. Analyze routes to identify and remove unsafe conditions in coordination with sales and dispatch. Partner with maintenance to keep equipment in compliance with safety standards. Oversee accident prevention programs and maintain a safe work environment. Conduct route observations, coach drivers, and monitor progress. Engage employees in a culture of safety through personal commitment and outreach. Monitor the telematics system for unsafe events and coach employees accordingly. Perform vehicle inspections and respond to accidents with preliminary investigations. Survey new stops for safe service and supervise DVIR pre‑ and post‑trip activities. Ensure adherence to DOT regulations, environmental compliance, and municipal ordinances. Maintain accurate route documentation, service records, and regulatory paperwork. Customer Experience Provide customer service that meets or exceeds expectations for the entire experience. Address missed pickup goals and achieve related targets. Resolve unusual service requests, equipment breakdowns, and schedule changes with timely communication. Interact with customers to solve issues and improve overall experience. Communicate changes and needs to appropriate municipal contacts. Conduct periodic onsite visits if required. Represent the company positively to drive satisfaction and loyalty. Efficiency Identify, evaluate, and develop route assignments that are cost effective and meet business objectives. Analyze route performance to ensure timely pickups. Review weight audit activity and route audits for cancellations. Work with dispatch to manage door traffic. Monitor employee attendance, punctuality, and performance. Verify proper waste segregation and disposal procedures are followed. Employee Engagement Create a collaborative, communicative team environment and drive employee engagement. Build and develop talent, understand career goals, and coach employees for advancement. Requirements and Qualifications 3+ years of experience in waste management operations. 2+ years of supervisory experience in waste management, transportation, or logistics services. Experience with route optimization and efficiency improvement. Associate's degree in Business, Logistics, or a related field, or equivalent experience. Knowledge of DOT requirements for commercial vehicles. Strong analytical skills. Knowledge of Power BI preferred. Computer skills: Microsoft Outlook and basic Excel. Desire and ability to learn the company’s software applications. Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. Defensive driving mindset (Smith System 5 Keys).
