Pharmacy Technician

POSITION PURPOSE

The Pharmacy Technician is under the direction of a pharmacist. The position performs pharmacy-related functions, in compliance with department policies and procedures that provide optimal pharmaceutical care. The position complies with all Federal, State and Local laws and regulations. Pharmacy Technicians take important steps to ensure all medication needs and regulatory compliance standards are met for our patients, and they demonstrate ethical conduct and always maintain patient confidentiality. Performs all duties in a manner consistent with the mission and values of MVMC.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Adhere to all local, state and federal health and civil codes. Adhere to all state and federal guidelines regarding annual licensing and restrictions on dispensing drugs. Create an environment that enables customers to feel welcome, important, and appreciated by answering questions regarding products sold within the department and throughout the store. Observe scheduled shift operating hours. Follow the approved efficiency and accuracy procedures when filling prescriptions. Monitor/maintain patient profiles. Monitor inventory levels and perform shelf maintenance to insure adequate service levels. Perform daily operational duties under the direction of the pharmacy manager. Follow department policies, procedures, and best practices for all pharmacy operations. Understand and perform cashier functions. Increase knowledge and maintain current medication information. Ensure compliance with HIPAA privacy regulations. Ensure that all current merchandising, customer service, labor control, expense and supply controls, loss prevention, maintenance, safety, food safety, associate and customer engagement rules are being followed. Reinforce safety programs by complying with safety procedures and identify unsafe conditions and notify store management. Practice preventive maintenance by properly inspecting equipment and notify appropriate department or store manager of any items in need of repair. Notify management of customer or employee accidents. Report all safety risks, or issues, and illegal activity, including robbery, theft, or fraud. Requirements Education, License/Registration, Experience, Knowledge and Abilities Pharmacy Technician license required. Retail pharmacy experience preferred. Continuing Education (CE) requirements must be on going. High school diploma or equivalent. Must be able to meet the minimum physical demands of the position. Knowledge of basic math: counting, addition, and subtraction. Must be 18 or older. Ability to preserve confidentiality of information. CPR certification required. Knowledge and Abilities Knowledgeable of relative age of patients served. Demonstrates sound judgement, patience, and always maintains a professional demeanor. Ability to work in a busy, and stressful environment. Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. Exercises tact, discretion, sensitivity and maintains confidentiality. Computer applications, MS Office, EMR, internet applications and standard office equipment. Self-directed, completes assignments accurately, thoroughly and with minimal oversight. Detail oriented, organizational skills and the ability to prioritize. Non-Essential Functions Attend workshops, seminars, and educational sessions to keep updated on changes in assigned area(s) of responsibility.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

The demands and conditions described here are representative of those the employee must meet to perform the essential functions of the job (see special accommodation statement). Extensive standing and walking with occasional reaching stooping, kneeling, and crouching. Must be able to lift, carry, push, or pull at least 50 pounds. Very good close vision and the ability to identify and distinguish color. Some risk of radiation exposure. Some risk of electrical shock. Work is in a clean hospital environment. Noise level is quiet to moderate. Frequent keyboarding and repetitive movements. Supervision Exercised This position does not supervise other staff.

OSHA CATEGORY CLASSIFICATION

Category classifications have been developed to assist employees in determining their risk for occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens. These categories are: Category I Employee will have occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens in the performance of their routine jobs. Category II Employee may have occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens in the performance of their routine jobs.
