Laundry Worker

Summary This position is located at the Royal C. Johnson Veterans Memorial Hospital within the Sioux Falls VA Health Care System. The employee will be assigned to the Laundry Section and will be singly processing an average of 80 pounds of linen an hour, which benefits the main Sioux Falls facility and on occasion its Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs). The employee must be able to perform all laundry/linen section activities. Learn more about this agency Duties Help Major duties and responsibilities include: Prepares and loads carts of clean linen for delivery to wards, clinics, and other areas; and loads carts according to established linen quotas. Reads, comprehends and/or interprets written and verbal instruction and/or communication from various avenues. Handles telephone requests for additional linen and maintains records of all such requests. Performs all duties in accordance with station policies, procedures, regulations, and standards applicable to the laundry section. Operates the flatwork spreader/feeder, ironer, folder, and stacker/conveyor; and operates industrial dryers, a small piece folder, and garment tunnel finisher. Unloads industrial washers and operates lift stations, index switches, and rail sling systems. Sorts soiled linen by classification and degree of soil and follows all established procedures. Performs routine care and maintenance of machines and equipment (i.e., tightening nuts and bolts and/or greasing/oiling fittings and wheels); and inspects linens for damage, stained items, etc. Follows established safety and infection control procedures; and keeps the assigned work area clean and free of debris. Qualifications To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: You will be asked to participate in a pre-employment evaluation as part of the pre-employment process for this position. Questions about physical demands or environmental factors may be addressed at the time of evaluation or examination. Incumbent must be able to perform moderate to heavy physical effort over an eight-hour period, including continuous standing, bending, lifting and climbing. Sustained physical activity involves turning, stooping, crouching, pushing, rubbing, and reaching. Objects weighing as much as fifty (50) pounds must be lifted or moved. Working Conditions: Work is normally performed in a clean, well-lit, heated and ventilated building, He/She is exposed to noise, vibrations, chemicals, and other potentially physically harmful situations from operation power equipment and tools. He/She must appropriately use PPE, such as various protective gear, including, but not limited to, gloves, or masks that are designed to protect the incumbent from hazards that can cause injury or illness as they are subject to chemical, physical, and biological hazards of which can cause skin irritation, as one example, or develop respiratory issues from commercial cleaning solutions. Additionally, he/she is routinely exposed to disagreeable odors, such as feces, vomit, and/or blood, etc. He/She is also routinely exposed to bloodborne pathogens (BBP), other potentially infectious materials (OPIM), Multidrug-Resistant Organisms (MDROs), contagious diseases and other infection organisms that can cause physical harm and/or death, if PPE is not used appropriately or is defective. He/She is exposed to potential injury and contamination from sharps, needles, etc. He/She is exposed to predatory pests, such as bed bugs, lice and scabies. Participation in the seasonal influenza program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP). HPTs may be paid or unpaid and include residents, interns, fellows and students. HCP also includes VHA personnel providing home-based care to Veterans and drivers and other personnel whose duties put them in contact with patients outside VA medical facilities. The Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP) and Career Transition Assistance Plan (CTAP) provide eligible displaced VA competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies.
