School Nurse

Full-Time and Permanent; 200 Days/Year; 10 Months/Year

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree preferred.
• Current, unrestricted Virginia Registered Nurse license.
• Current Basic Life Support CPR/AED for Healthcare Providers certification required.
• Valid Virginia Driver's License.
• Reliable transportation required.
• Minimum of 2 years' experience recommended; medical/surgical nursing or pediatric nursing experience preferred.
• Experience working in a school setting preferred.
• Experience working with students with disabilities is preferred.

Nature of Position

• This position requires standing, lifting, walking up and down corridors, walking up and down stairs, hearing, seeing, balancing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, grasping, bending, pushing, reaching, and the ability to perform CPR and occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.
• Exposure to bloodborne pathogens is a possibility, and proper PPE will be provided.
• Ability to work independently and interdependently within the school setting.
• Ability to work effectively with people and demonstrate good human relations skills.
• Requires timely and regular adherence to established work schedules.

Essential Duties

• Maintain and operate a school clinic.
• Ensure clinic supplies are well stocked and follow ordering and pickup procedures.
• Provide professional nursing care in a school setting.
• Provide nursing assessments and complete proper documentation for students.
• Administer medication and first aid to students.
• Provide skilled nursing care to students with disabilities as needed.
• Document student interactions, medication administration, and parent health concerns within the school district's database and per protocol.
• Participate in developing and implementing emergency health plans as needed for students with chronic conditions.
• Complete screenings for vision, hearing, height, and weight per the Virginia School Health Guidelines.
• Implement and record required screenings and notify parents/guardians when further medical evaluation is indicated.
• Establish and update students' health and immunization records within the district's database.
• Emergency care for students, staff, and guests during school hours.
• Initiate health referrals to parents and school personnel for intervention, remediation, and follow-through.
• Provide parental updates on students' health status and parent notification in emergency situations.
• Nursing liaison for students, staff, administration, and parents.
• Ensure compliance with all laws including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) to protect the confidentiality of medical information and obtain written consent of the parent/guardian to share information.
• Participate in Student Support Services Team, Individualized Education Plan, and/or 504 meetings as needed.
• Manage third-party billing with Medicaid to obtain reimbursement for skilled nursing care for specific students.
• Follow procedures for suspected cases of child abuse and neglect.
• Complete reports for assigned school(s) per Department of Education and Norfolk Public Schools guidelines.
• Provide instruction on health-related topics to students and families as appropriate.
• Distribute health information to assist students and families in making health-related decisions.
• Present, train, and maintain appropriate standards from OSHA regarding contact with and possible exposure to blood-borne pathogens and other potentially infectious body materials within the school setting.
• Substitute as the school nurse in other schools as directed by the Leadership Team based on skilled care and acuity needs.
• Assist with the orientation and mentoring of newly hired school nurses and wellness assistants as needed.

In addition to the base salary listed, this position is eligible for an advanced degree stipend.

Educational Stipend Details (Conditions Apply)

• Master's Degree: $3,500/Year
• Master's Degree + 30 Hours: $5,400/Year
• Doctoral Degree: $7,800/Year
