Field Service Technician

Position Summary As a Field Service Technician , you will assist with on‑site installations, troubleshooting, repairs, and maintenance of telecommunications products and equipment that TDS sells and leases. You will have direct, face‑to‑face contact with our customers and is expected to be proactive with the sales of TDS services and products. Services include, but are not limited to, Telephony, Video/CATV/DBS, Internet, and/or high speed networks. This position exceeds customer expectations by performing extraordinary customer service, identifying customer needs, and providing them with communications solutions. You will also understand how to use and demonstrate TDS products, seek sales opportunities while educating the customer. Schedule This role will follow a Wednesday–Saturday schedule, working four 10‑hour shifts (8:00 AM–7:00 PM). Additional overtime may be required as‑needed, and participation in an on‑call rotation is required. Location Requirement The individual selected for this position will be required to reside within a 60‑minute driving distance from the Appleton, Wisconsin warehouse located at 2900 N Zuehlke Dr Ste B, Appleton, WI 54911. Compensation and Sign‑On Bonus This position is eligible for a $2,500 sign‑on bonus. (Payout terms apply) Responsibilities Assist with and perform on‑site installing, troubleshooting, testing, splicing, repairing, and maintaining telephone equipment and general network equipment, customer premise equipment, Video/CATV/DBS, fiber optic/copper facilities and/or other TDS products & services for new and existing customers. Identify location of defective cable using various test equipment and repair buried, aerial, underground and/or customer cable. Locate cable and fiber in response to customer requests and/or construction needs. Operate pole climbing and construction equipment, locate, identify and mark company underground and buried facilities to prevent damage, and keep an orderly log of all locate requests in our exchange area. Perform cable fault acceptance tests on newly constructed facilities. Provide troubleshooting support techniques and corrections, responding to “trouble” dispatches. Support enhancement and maintenance of record systems (cross‑connects, line groups, network elements, etc.). Provide excellent customer service and proactively educate and sell TDS products and services to customers. Gain working knowledge of RUS Standards and grounding practices associated with splicing and maintenance of outside‑plant facilities and equipment. Required Qualifications Valid driver’s license. Follow TDS attendance guidelines to meet business needs. Other Qualifications Successfully complete customer‑specific requirements, including background checks, upon hire. Availability for on‑call/standby responsibilities; occasional travel and overtime. Complete all components of the Safety Course curriculum upon hire. Maintain DOT requirements for operating vehicles with combined GVRW >10,000 lbs. A+ certification and computer networking experience. Understand telecommunication products and services: Inside Wiring/Cable, Internet/Intranet, Bonding & Grounding, Data & Computers/Transmission Concepts, Fiber Optic Transmission, Static Sensitive Equipment, Color Codes, Structured Wiring, Video/CATV/DBS Installation, Inventory Systems, Cable Locating, Battery Maintenance, Key Systems/PBX, Centrex, Switch Maintenance, Voicemail, Special Circuits, Fiber Terminals, Subscriber CXR Terminals, T‑1s, ISPs, DSL, ISDN Voice & Data, Testing & Certifying Loops. Practical knowledge/experience with computer applications such as Databases, Trouble/Repair/Dispatch Systems, Plant Record Systems, MS Outlook, MS Word, and MS Excel. Ability to work and make decisions independently with little or no supervision. Demonstrated customer service and sales skills, and effective verbal and written communication. Proven organizational skills and ability to multi‑task. Operate vehicles with manual transmissions. Physical Demands and Work Environment The job requires sitting, standing, writing, operating a computer keyboard, engaging with customers, moving about and reaching items, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, climbing, and lifting up to 50 pounds regularly and up to 100 pounds occasionally. Specific vision abilities include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The position may involve working outdoors, in mechanical/equipment rooms, and in possible extreme weather conditions. It may involve exposure to moving mechanical parts and heavy equipment.
