Job Description
Job Title: Dialysis Technician
Department: Nephrology / Dialysis Center
Reports To: Registered Nurse (RN), Nephrologist, or Dialysis Unit Supervisor

Job Summary:
The Dialysis Technician is responsible for providing dialysis treatment to patients with kidney failure or chronic kidney disease. This role includes preparing and operating dialysis machines, monitoring patients during treatment, and ensuring a safe, clean, and supportive environment.

Key Responsibilities:
Set Up and Maintenance

Assemble and test dialysis machines before each treatment.

Sanitize and maintain equipment according to protocol.

Dispose of waste products following safety and infection control standards.

Patient Care

Verify patient identity and review treatment orders.

Take vital signs (blood pressure, weight, temperature) before, during, and after treatment.

Insert and remove needles for treatment access (fistula, graft, or catheter).

Monitor patients throughout the procedure for any adverse reactions or complications.

Respond to alarms and emergencies promptly.

Record and report patient data accurately.

Communication

Report changes in patient condition to the RN or nephrologist.

Educate patients and families on treatment and home care instructions as directed.

Compliance

Follow HIPAA guidelines to maintain patient confidentiality.

Adhere to federal, state, and facility safety and infection control protocols.

Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED required.

Completion of an accredited Dialysis Technician training program.

Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Ability to work in high-stress and emotionally charged environments.

Certification & Licensing Requirements by State (U.S.):
Federal regulations from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) require certification within 18 months of employment for dialysis technicians working in dialysis facilities certified by CMS. However, state-specific regulations may also apply.

States that Require State Certification, Licensing, or Registration (as of current regulations):
California - Must be certified by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) as a Certified Hemodialysis Technician (CHT). Requires passing an approved exam (e.g., BONENT, NNCC).

Ohio - Requires state certification through the Ohio Board of Nursing.

Nevada - Requires licensure by the Nevada State Board of Nursing.

New Mexico - Registration required with the New Mexico Board of Nursing.

Oregon - Requires certification and registration with the Oregon State Board of Nursing.

Texas - Requires certification recognized by the Texas Department of State Health Services.

Utah - Requires registration with the Utah Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing.

Connecticut - Certification required via an approved exam.

States Following Federal Guidelines Only:
Most other states follow CMS guidelines and require national certification from one of the following organizations within 18 months of hire:

BONENT - Board of Nephrology Examiners Nursing and Technology

NNCC - Nephrology Nursing Certification Commission

NNCO - National Nephrology Certification Organization

Work Environment:
Clinical setting, typically in a dialysis center or hospital.

Exposure to bodily fluids, infectious diseases, and medical equipment.

Requires standing for long periods and occasional lifting of patients or equipment.
