Special Agent (Lateral) Announcement number/Req ID: req773 Closing date: 7/31/2026 Pay scale & grade: LP 03- 03 Salary: $90,853.00 - $147,928.00 PA Job series: 0083 Appointment type: Permanent Work schedule: Full-Time Location: Washington, DC 20001 Overview The United States Capitol Police (USCP) safeguards Congress, Members of Congress, employees, visitors, and Congressional buildings and grounds from crime, disruption, and terrorism. The USCP protects and secures Congress so it can fulfill its constitutional and legislative responsibilities in a safe, secure, and open environment. Responsibilities Special Agents within the Protective Services Bureau (PSB) perform a full range of protective and investigative functions. Agents are assigned to the Dignitary Protection Division (DPD) or the Investigations Division (ID). DPD Special Agents: Provide protection of congressional leadership, coordinate security arrangements for domestic and international travel, conduct on‑ground protection, safeguard members and families, provide protection for visiting officials and congressional events. ID Special Agents: Investigate criminal and terroristic activity, collect and disseminate information, prepare written reports, perform investigative functions, conduct surveillance, liaise with other law‑enforcement agencies, serve as a liaison, conduct arrest and search warrants, support prosecutions. Travel 5 Travel is required for both domestic and international assignments. Requirements Must obtain and maintain a Top Secret/SCI security clearance. Applicants must provide required documents and complete pre‑employment screening, including Personal History Statement and background investigations conducted through the ESOPH system. Qualifications Completed the FLETC Criminal Investigator Training Program (CITP) or an equivalent training program from the FBI, DEA, or U.S. Postal Inspection Service. Certificate or transcript required. Current law enforcement officer with at least 9 months of experience after training, and 52 weeks of experience at time of appointment. Must be a current U.S. citizen, age 21 or older, and not older than 39 (or 40 if certain conditions met). High School diploma or GED required. Valid U.S. driver's license with no revocation or suspension in the past year. Must pass a comprehensive criminal history check, credit check, and selective service registration (male applicants). Female applicants exempt from selective service. Must possess a firearm and ammunition; applicants convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence are ineligible. Must complete required medical, psychological, polygraph, and background investigations. Must successfully finish the 6‑week USCP Basic Agent Training Program (BATP) for DPD or 5‑week USCP Basic Investigations Training Program (BITP) for ID. Must maintain firearm proficiency. Willingness to work nights, weekends, and holidays. Security Clearance Security clearance level 4 required. Drug Test Drug test required. Required Documents Resume Copy of FLETC CITP or USCP Basic Agent Training Program (BATP) or equivalent certificate/transcript SF‑50(s) documenting retirement and 1811 series employment Benefits The position offers a competitive starting salary of $90,853.00 with opportunities for overtime. A recruitment bonus of $5,000 is provided after appointment, and another $5,000 after 18 months of service.
