Overview
Caring, compassionate pediatric hematologist-oncologist to join Hurley Children’s Hospital Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Service. The individual will participate in the diagnosis, care and treatment of children with cancer or blood disorders. Leadership opportunities for the program and responsibility for treating infant, child and adolescent patients with cancer and hematologic disorders (e.g., leukemia, lymphoma, sickle-cell anemia, hemophilia). With Hurley Children’s Hospital hosting a pediatric residency training program in affiliation with Michigan State University-College of Human Medicine, the individual is eligible for a faculty appointment, assisting in the training of resident physicians and medical students.

Responsibilities
- Inpatient and outpatient service, alternating outpatient and inpatient with another full-time pediatric hematologist-oncologist
- Inpatient attending and consult service in one-week blocks
- Fully staffed outpatient clinic and infusion center within Hurley Children’s Hospital
- Teaching of MSU medical students and pediatric resident physicians
- Research opportunities
- Federally funded hemophilia treatment center

Program Context
As the region’s only hematology/oncology service and one of only eight in the state, Hurley Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Clinic provides access to advanced treatments and clinical trials. Our team collaborates with nearby pediatric specialists to guide patients on the journey back to health through:

Patient and family can rely upon our expert staff in pediatric critical/intensive care to provide full sedation services for procedures and diagnostic imaging. Our Child and Family Specialists help ease stress and provide companionship and activities for patients.
Pediatric Sickle Cell Clinic
Provides support to primary care physicians in diagnosis and long-term follow-up care through:
- Screening to confirm sickle cell disease
- Testing to determine whether patients are carriers
- Education and counseling for pediatric patients with sickle cell disease
- Education and counseling for pediatric patients with sickle cell trait
- Ambulatory care for children with sickle cell related problems
- Disease management for sickle cell and other hemoglobinopathies
- Collaborative care for surgical problems associated with sickle cell disease
- Referral services to address complications in orthopedic, neurologic, renal, cardiac, ophthalmic and pulmonary issues
- Innovative interventions to ward off complications whenever possible
- Outpatient care of acute problems and admission to Hurley Children’s Hospital when necessary
- Outpatient transfusion therapy for pre-operative preparation and within Stroke Prevention guidelines
Eastern Michigan Hemophilia Treatment Center
We treat a wide range of bleeding and clotting disorders through:
- Education
- Diagnostic Evaluation
- Complete Medical Management
- Preventive Care against complications
- Home care services for the whole spectrum of blood disorders
Part of a national network of Hemophilia Treatment Centers, the Eastern Michigan Hemophilia Treatment Center brings together doctors, nurses, physical therapists, social workers, psychologists, dietitians and genetic counselors to treat hemophilia, von Willebrand disease, platelet disorders, Thrombophilia and Thrombosis. We prioritize preventing complications such as joint damage that can result from bleeding.

Qualifications
- Preferred: 3 years of experience in the delivery of pediatric hematology and oncology care
- Required: MD or DO degree
- Current certification in Pediatric Hematology Oncology from the American Board of Pediatrics (or board-eligible) and must be eligible for medical licensure in the State of Michigan and for medical staff privileges at participating institutions
- Interest and experience in an academic setting
- Strong leadership and teamwork skills
- Good observation, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills
- In-depth knowledge of the field and ability to remain up to date
