Production Supervisor

The Production Supervisor (Group Leader) oversees a team of production employees in a high-volume machining facility, ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality operations. You apply independent judgment within established Global Manufacturing Systems (GMS) to manage daily production, support continuous improvement, and uphold the principles of Safety, People, Quality, Responsiveness, Cost, and Environment (SPQRCE). In this onsite role based in Bay City, Michigan, you lead teams in a fast-paced environment, support the transition to electric and autonomous vehicle manufacturing, and foster a culture of teamwork, accountability, and operational excellence.

• Lead and supervise a team of production employees in a machining plant, ensuring safe and efficient execution of daily operations.
• Analyze and adjust daily manufacturing plans to meet production targets while maintaining quality and safety standards.
• Manage manpower allocation across lines and processes, responding promptly to staffing or operational issues to maintain production flow.
• Oversee production activities for CNC machining operations, including machining components such as cam shafts and connecting rods.
• Administer and consistently apply national and local labor agreements with union-represented employees, working effectively within a unionized environment.
• Collaborate with union partners to address workplace issues, manage grievances, and maintain constructive labor–management relationships.
• Enforce quality processes with customer safety at the center, ensuring compliance with all quality and regulatory requirements.
• Perform critical confirmations and inspections to verify adherence to Built-in-Quality standards and resolve discrepancies promptly.
• Drive quality improvements through effective feedback and feedforward communication with team members and cross-functional partners.
• Apply Global Manufacturing Systems (GMS) principles to optimize processes and support continuous improvement initiatives.
• Use data and operational metrics to locate, analyze, and interpret performance trends, supporting accountability and problem-solving.
• Identify and address production issues using basic troubleshooting and root cause analysis for both equipment and process-related problems.
• Hold team members accountable for performance, attendance, safety, and adherence to standard work practices.
• Coach, mentor, and develop employees and Team Leaders to build skills, support growth, and ensure consistent execution of standard work.
• Conduct disciplinary interviews when necessary, documenting issues and following established procedures.
• Promote and maintain a strong safety culture by reinforcing safe work practices and addressing unsafe conditions or behaviors immediately.
• Navigate ambiguity and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment, prioritizing effectively to meet production and quality goals.
• Support continuous improvement and lean manufacturing efforts to enhance efficiency, reduce waste, and improve overall performance.
• Utilize timekeeping systems such as Kronos to manage attendance, scheduling, and labor reporting accurately.
• Support and participate in GM Built-in-Quality initiatives and other structured problem-solving or improvement programs.
• Foster a collaborative and respectful team environment that encourages communication, engagement, and shared ownership of results.

• High school diploma (HS Diploma) required.
• At least 2+ years of experience as a Supervisor or Group Leader in a manufacturing environment, ideally within automotive.
• Proven experience overseeing union-represented employees, including working within union agreements and processes.
• Demonstrated ability to lead and manage employees in a production setting, including coaching and performance management.
• Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify issues and implement effective solutions.
• Ability to perform basic troubleshooting and root cause analysis for employee-related issues and basic machine or process problems.
• Experience holding team members accountable for safety, quality, attendance, and performance expectations.
• Evidence of strong job tenure, such as 4+ years at a company with demonstrated growth and progression.
• Experience using Kronos or similar timekeeping systems for attendance and labor management.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment and navigate ambiguity while driving accountability.
• Strong communication skills to provide clear direction, feedback, and follow-up with employees and union partners.
• Comfort working in a technical, manufacturing environment with CNC machining operations and adherence to GMS and SPQRCE principles.

• Production management experience in a machining or CNC-focused facility.
• Hands-on experience with CNC machines, machining processes, or CNC machining operations.
• Exposure to maintenance and repair activities in a manufacturing environment.
• Experience in continuous improvement initiatives and lean manufacturing methodologies.
• Familiarity with Global Manufacturing Systems (GMS) and SPQRCE (Safety, People, Quality, Responsiveness, Cost, Environment) frameworks.
• Prior involvement in Built-in-Quality initiatives or structured quality assurance programs.
• Experience supervising or leading teams in a unionized environment, including working with UAW or similar unions.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in documentation, scheduling, and process adherence.
• Ability to collaborate across functions, including quality, maintenance, and operations, to resolve issues and improve processes.

This role is fully onsite in a machining plant that specializes in CNC machining of components such as cam shafts and connecting rods. You work in a technical production environment where decisions follow established procedures and Global Manufacturing Systems, with a strong focus on Safety, People, Quality, Responsiveness, Cost, and Environment (SPQRCE). The schedule typically includes Monday through Friday, with weekend work required. Candidates should expect to work 2 to 3 consecutive weekends before having a weekend off, and there is ongoing discussion that Saturday and Sunday may become regular workdays with midweek days off (such as Wednesday and Thursday). You must be open to both 2nd and 3rd shifts. The 2nd shift runs approximately 2:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., and the 3rd shift runs approximately 10:00 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. starting Sunday night; in both cases, you are expected to arrive about 30 minutes before shift start and remain about 30 minutes after shift end for handoffs and coordination. The plant environment is fast-paced and production-driven, with a strong emphasis on safety procedures, standard work, and adherence to quality standards. Dress and personal protective equipment align with typical machining plant requirements, including appropriate work attire and safety gear suitable for a CNC machining and manufacturing setting.

This is a Contract position based out of Bay City, MI.

The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $55.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
