Sterile Processing Technician

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Physician and/or Registered Nurse

GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES

Eight‑hour days Monday through Friday. Responsible for the care and preparation of surgical instruments and supplies. Maintains established inventory levels by checking supplies and equipment. Orders supplies for the area. Performs appropriate testing of all sterilizers and keeps accurate records.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE / REQUIREMENTS

High School Diploma or Equivalent. State licensure or certification as a Sterilization Technician, as required by state regulations or contract specifications. At least 1 year of experience working in a fast‑paced operating room setting.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS

Ability to be on your feet for long periods, lift or turn patients. Requires sitting and standing associated with a normal office environment. Ability to concentrate for periods of up to four hours. Ability to communicate verbally in person and over the telephone. Ability to use a computer keyboard and view a computer monitor. May be exposed to communicable diseases and unpleasant sights, odors, and materials.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Demonstrated knowledge of sterile processing principles and procedures as applicable to surgical instruments and supplies. Proficient in the nursing process and ability to apply best practices to the sterile processing workflow. Ability to utilize recognized channels of communication. Ability to maintain good interpersonal relationships with patients, co‑workers, and other health team members.
