Transportation Operations Technician I

Overview The Agency of Transportation is seeking a Transportation Operations Technician I. This position is responsible for various tasks related to highway maintenance, such as repairing guardrails, cutting trees/brush, patching roads, picking litter, ditching, and more. In the winter months, this position will also assist with plowing and salting, and overtime may be required. Responsibilities Repair guardrails Cut trees and brush Patch roads Pick litter Ditch Assist with plowing and salting during winter months Perform overtime work as required Environmental Factors Duties require working outdoors in extreme weather conditions. Employees may need to report outside of their normal schedule and must be reachable by phone. Work is performed near heavy equipment, hazardous materials, and roadside litter, and may expose employees to blood and airborne pathogens. Traffic hazards and emergencies such as flooding, ice, and snow are present. The position requires lifting materials and use of maintenance tools. Employees must participate in a random drug and alcohol testing program prior to operating vehicles or equipment. Minimum Qualifications No education or experience required. Applicants must be at least 18 years old. Preferred Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. Special Requirements A valid driver’s license is required. The incumbent must live within reasonable proximity of the assigned workstation. Possession of a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required for successful completion of original probation. The incumbent must complete all VTTC required coursework within six (6) months or be enrolled.
