Librarian - Long Term Substitute

This is a Long Term Sub assignment from now through October 2, 2026.

The School Librarian plays a vital role in supporting student learning and literacy across all grade levels. This position oversees the library's daily operations, manages print and digital resources, and collaborates with teachers and paraprofessionals to enrich the curriculum and enhance classroom instruction. The librarian fosters a welcoming, inclusive environment where students develop research skills, digital literacy, and a lifelong love of reading.

Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Library Science, required.
  • Valid Illinois Professional Educator License with appropriate endorsements (Library Information Specialist, Media, or related), required.
  • License registered with Lake County ROE 34, required.

Essential Functions

Learning and Teaching

  • Works as a team with co-librarian to teach students information literacy and technology skills needed to sort through information, evaluate resources and conduct research.
  • Works as a team with co-librarian to support students' success by guiding them in reading for understanding, for exposure to a diversity of viewpoints and genres, and for pleasure.
  • Performs the duties of information specialist, teacher, and instructional consultant as a specialist in learning resources and strategies; information location, evaluation and use; and the design of instruction.
  • Works with others to design learning activities for students and/or curricular revisions.
  • Utilizes current research and methods in areas of reading, technology, teaching, learning, and library and information science.
  • Collaborates with other teachers to integrate research, information retrieval skills, and literature appreciation into the curriculum.
  • Works with co-librarian to provide continuous professional development opportunities for staff through individual consultation, team meetings, and all-staff sessions.
  • Works towards equitable and inclusive curriculum and instruction and understands historical and structural inequality.
  • Understands and implements strategies for differentiated instruction to help all learners succeed.
  • Assists other teachers and students in using information resources and incorporating information literacy skills into the classroom curriculum.
  • Uses a variety of materials and activities to stimulate and maximize learning to help all students achieve educational and personal goals.
  • Establishes and maintains effective relationships with students, peers, and parents.

Information and Access

  • Selects materials and technology which support District 113's educational philosophy and curriculum.
  • Creates and maintains a collection development process which includes maintaining accurate and current catalogs and records, weeding, and inventories.
  • Provides access to materials and information for both students and staff by adhering to established policies, laws (including copyright laws), principles of intellectual freedom, and ethical behavior.

Program Administration

  • Ability to assume responsibility, display initiative and exercise good judgment.
  • Ability to collaborate within a team environment.
  • Works with the Library Team to develop short and long-range goals which guide the development of the library program.
  • Promotes the library program, services, and materials by maintaining a positive relationship with students, staff, and community.
  • Creates an environment that is safe and conducive to learning by providing supervision, building positive relationships and by encouraging social interaction, active engagement, and self-reflection.
  • Has effective and flexible student management skills.
  • Is experienced and fluent with Google platform (e.g. Google docs, slides, sheets, forms), digital learning tools and other educational technology tools and applications.
  • Maintains and enhances professional knowledge in trends and technology in information science by participating in various professional organizations and activities which relate to the library program and technology.
  • Collaborates with public libraries and other community agencies to broaden the reach of the library program among students and families.
  • Adheres to Board policies and district procedures.

Language Skills

Communicates clearly both in oral and written format with all constituents of the District 113 community. Reads, analyzes and interprets professional literature. Effectively present information and respond to questions from constituency groups. Read and write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Apply knowledge of current research and theory in a specific field. Establish and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships with students, staff and the school community. Perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

Mathematical and Technical Skills

Calculate figures, estimates, proportions, percentages, and cost projections. Apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. Strong technology skills, including standard Microsoft Office suite / Google Workspace, financial management, and data analysis.

Reasoning Ability

Define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Interpret an extensive variety of verbal and written instructions and deal with multiple abstract and concrete variables.

Contacts Outside Your Own Department:

Build positive relationships with constituents of the District 113 community that includes, teachers, school staff, administrative team, Board of Education, guardians, students, and private providers.

Physical and Mental Demands:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, bend, write, type, speak, listen, and taste or smell.
  • The employee is regularly required to communicate with staff and others.
  • The employee is frequently required to use hands and/or fingers, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls.
  • The employee may occasionally be required to climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, twist, reach or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, such as boxes of books.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • Specific psychological demands of this job include the ability to remain calm under stress levels associated with job demands, along with constant contact with students, colleagues and the public.

Working Conditions:

  • In the work environment, this role is regularly exposed to office environmental conditions.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate with regular exposure to loud classrooms, hallways, cafeterias or sports venues.
  • The employee is regularly required to meet deadlines with severe time constraints and interact with the public and staff in addition to meeting multiple demands from several people.
  • The employee is infrequently required to work irregular or extended work hours, which may include evenings or weekends.

Safety:

As a part of the District workforce, this role is responsible for being aware of, modeling and contributing to the maintenance and implementation of all District safety policies and procedures. The role is directly responsible for the safety, well-being, and work output of students.
