Summary of Job Purpose The Registered Nurse (RN) is accountable for providing a restorative healing experience for the patient and the patient’s support systems in transformational partnership with the Clinical Manager and the interdisciplinary team. As an accountable professional, the RN exercises autonomy, authority, and control to ensure excellent patient outcomes. Professional accountability is expressed in five areas: practice, quality assurance, competence, research, and resource management. Essential Job Responsibilities Patient Assessment – Performs a thorough and ongoing holistic nursing assessment, identifies risks, prioritizes problems, and develops an individualized plan of care while documenting and entering SAFE Act reports when indicated. Patient Care/Discharge Planning – Coordinates care with patients, support systems, and health‑care team members, initiates community referrals, manages insurance authorizations, and updates the utilization review liaison. Teaching – Provides individualized, ongoing education to patients and support systems using evidence‑based practice throughout the continuum of care. Communication – Demonstrates mutual respect, active listening, and assertive communication with the interdisciplinary team, advocating for patient rights and fostering high‑performance teams. Treatment/Procedures – Performs all treatments and procedures per evidence‑based policies and collaborates with the MD and team members. Documentation – Accurately records patient information, ensuring completeness and correctness before submitting to medical records. Medication Administration – Manages the medication process, including assessment, administration, monitoring, and education, and initiates referrals to pharmacy as needed. Quality Performance and Improvement (QPI) – Participates in QPI processes to enhance patient outcomes, collect and analyze data, and implement corrective actions. Delegation to and Development of Co‑workers – Delegates care tasks appropriately, supervises care delivery, and mentors co‑workers from novice to expert. Safety – Conducts hourly rounds, observes patients, intervenes to remove barriers, and may lead crisis situations. Cross Training – May cross‑train and/or float to other departments, including ED, with appropriate certifications. Participates in interdisciplinary shift‑change meetings. Unit Specific Competencies – Demonstrates unit‑specific skills and knowledge. Essential Job Qualifications Education Graduate of an accredited school of nursing, currently licensed in the State of New York, or permittee. Membership in a professional organization suggested. Experience Basic knowledge of nursing theory and practice, appropriate technology and practice standards for the area of responsibility, sound clinical skills, knowledge of hospital structure, objectives and standards of practice, and positive communication skills.
